managed to get some great seats to the tool show here last night, albiet for a price on ebay that I won't repeat, cause its obscene. I had seen them on their last tour, and so, had some damned high expectations. Their previous visit was a mind-altering, aural-heaven kind of experience.
They did not disappoint.
The show this time around wasn't as visual as the last, but that would have been hard to top. Still, they brought the eye-candy, beat synchronized effects that people have come to expect from a tool show. For those that don't know, Adam Jones (guitar), was formerly a special effects guru in the movie industry, and did makeup and set design for movies like Jurassic Park and Terminator 2. Now he puts his skills to use doing all the videos and visual aspect for Tool.
I don't care if you're even a fan of their music...honestly, just go for the visuals. They're completely engrossing...you don't even end up watching the band (except when maynard is pulling some of his antics).
The entire stage was completely white, and was used as a screen for the visual component. There was more later on in terms of visuals, but I don't want to spoil the suprise for those who are going to see them. Images would change from the inside of a lung, breathing in and out with the beat, to cosmic images overlayed with psychadellic colours. saturn ascending, coming in line with the earth and the sun melting into colours and back again, all synchronized with the music. it was truly something to see.
Setlist:
Stinkfist
The Pot
Forty Six & 2
Jambi
Schism
Rosetta Stoned
Opiate
Sober
Lateralus
Vicarious
Aenima
After 'sober', danny's drumkit required repair (he broke a hi-hat), so maynard told a story. anyone who has seen tool before knows maynard doesnt talk for extended periods of time very often, so i was pretty excited. he then proceeded to tell us about how they would be back in the new year, but only to invade, storm troopers and all, to get our oil. he also appologized for the US president, then told a joke about how you get a dog to stop humping your leg, which was damned funny.
They then went into a completely improvised instrumental with maynard and adam both on synth-guitar rigs, and justin kneeling and jaming on the bass. This is another very rare thing at a tool show, as they are usually programed like clockwork. cosmic sounds, very very spacey...had me completely lost at that point.
When the music went back on the energy in the building was palpable. They closed it all off with a fantastic version of Aenima, and then walked off like the conquerors they are. Other highlights included Schism, which they play a bit differently now, changing the pacing through the song...and the fire at the end of it (from the video)...had everyone in the building in complete awe. you'll see what i mean if you go (which you should).
I would have taken pictures (cause i know Jib will ask for proof), but they were really sticky about it, and were confiscating cameras left and right. they even banned all cell phones with cameras. if anyone can post some pics from this tour, i'd really appreciate it.
my only complaints...i really, REALLY wanted to here "10,000 Days" and "Right In Two", but I guess i'll have to see them another time, which is fine by me
