"A Turkish hacker seeding usenet groups with trojan horses has made it a habit to hunt down pedophiles trolling the groups. The cases go back to 2000, with the mysterious good samaritan responsible for several arrests. The man now has tacit approval from the FBI for his actions."

From the article: "At the urging of Montgomery Police Capt. Kevin Murphy, '1069' eventually turned over more and more information that led back to a computer owned by Bradley Joseph Steiger, who had worked as an emergency room physician in Alabama. The hacker's finds included information from Steiger's AT&T WorldNet account, records from his checking account, and a list of directories on his computer's hard drive where sexually explicit photographs were stored."

So now the government is giving hackers a green light to search out you pedophiles. Thoughts?

isn't that essentially digital wiretapping? Granted I hate pedophiles, but this truly defines an invasion of privacy unless all the information was placed in public view.

It's more than that. This gives non-government folks (vigilantes) the green light to break into systems to look for evidence. Here's the troubling part- Someone could just as easily break into your system plant "evidence" and report you for kiddy porn to the FBI.

As much I like to see Pedo's get traced down and removed from society, this is a scary thing. It seems this Turkish guy has all the right intentions, but who can tell what he might have done apart from tracing the scum of the earth on the web? Kudos to him for making the world a little safer, but this should be done by officials who can be kept in check. Give the guy a job on an FBI team but make it official IMO. Makes it possible to keep an eye on his actions...
