    Production logic users???

    hey all,

i am just sending out a call on this board to see if any logic users on this board. if so say a quick hello here and maybe we can get a dialogue going on this amazingly powerful DAW.

I use Logic Platinum 5.5 on WinXP based PC. I would love to upgrade to the Mac World, but it will be quite a while before i can afford anything like that. oh well!

      Re: logic users???

      Another mac vs pc thread?

After a few months of considering and reading about this topic (I'm about to build a complete DAW), I finally made up my mind about the whole pc/mac story: you should go for MAC if music production is your profession, or at least, you can't afford any errors during your production activities. After all, MACs are known as stable machines.

But, as PC's are getting faster and faster, they aren't inferior anymore to MACs when it comes to speed of working. Off course, you still have to deal with error messages, eventual crashes ... but hey, we aren't in the windows 98 era anymore. Windows XP runs very stable when you have a dedicated music production PC, only equiped with the required music production software, and without internet connection. But which home studio producer cares about a small system crash, if he/she can save a lot of money in not buying a MAC. I don't, because I've hardly had any win XP crash. And the times I had a crash were quickly forgotten after a simple reboot, without any loss of data as I'm saving my work every minute (ctrl+s has become a habit during music production)

From everything I have read last months, my conclusion: for the current systems, stablebility is the only fundamental difference between mac and pc.

Ok, an extra minus is the use of logic 7 ... which is only available as a mac version. In another topic, I mentioned that I don't care about the cubase/mac dilemma, but this week, I saw some videos about logic pro 7, and to be honest, the plugins looked far more usable than the cubase sx 3 plugins. This is the last thing that eventually could consider me buying a mac. But anyway, I can do a lot with my cuabse sx 3.

This weekend, I asked the guys of my computer store to do a proposal for a music production PC. Normally, I should receive the information one of these days. If some of you are interested, I will post some follow-ups.

        Re: logic users???

no no no i had no intention of starting a mac vs. pc thread at all. i have used both the pc and mac versions of various logic releases and in general alot of things you can do with the program are very much the same across both platforms.

for instance, lately i have had a problem with logic sending midi reset messages to my Korg Triton which keeps changing the selected patch or program to bank 0 program 0. so i have been trying to learn how to quickly record program changes so that i don't have this prob anymore.

shawn did you make that track i just DLed in Logic also?

yes i agree, this was not a pc vs mac thing at all. just the features in logic now that it is in 7 he would appreciate... thats all.

            Re: logic users???

I was just teasing you guys. I guess I've been reading too many pc/mac threads last months

Do any of you have experience both in cubase sx3 and logic pro 7? Since I got to know more about logic pro 7, I've really started doubting now (again )

What's bothering me about MAC is the fact they don't have the right configuration for me: you have the cheaps ass: Mac mini (I'm really doubting if this box is powerfull and noise free enough ... even with the 1,66 Ghz intel dual core aboard); btw: can you set up a dual screen configuration on those little MACs? Ok, in the end, you can run Logic Pro 7. Then you have the iMAC which are still affordable, but I hate the looks of it (you have to take the screen as it is). Btw, I don't want to pay for things like 'iSight' ... Finally, when you want to go hardcore, the Mac Pro, which are too heavy for normal music production imo (who really needs a quad processor?).

It's not easy, not at all

              Re: logic users???

does anyone use actual hardware synths these days??

i know most of the world is going to plug-ins as opposed to physical gear, but i am still using a Korg Triton in conjunction with Reason 2.5 and Logic 5.5

That being said does anyone know the quickest way to record program changes??

My method lately is hit pause, then record, then uncheck the Prg. box of the MIDI channel that you want to record a program change on. change the program then hit stop. this seems tedious as hell to me.

Another topic of discussion that always rolls in Logic is the complex world of environments. I use a VERY basic environment. I would love to be able to build an elaborate one, but even after 5 years of using Logic the environment still stumps me...

              thoughts? suggestions??

not sure if anyone cares, but i finally figured out an easier way to record program changes:

in the arrange page use the pencil tool to create a new sequence on the midi track that you want to set up a program change. once you have done that open the event list editor. click on the icon "88" so that it is lit up.

then use the pencil tool to create an event. once that is done all you have to do is click and hold on the program number in the event list and choose your patch. Voila!!!

                still tedious but it works...

                    Re: logic users???

I'm now thinking about a iMAC 20" / Logic Pro 7 combination, but as I'm doing this only a as hobby, I think the investment is a bit too heavy for a every-day 8 to 5 working guy like me . However, I'd like to take it a bit further than just hobby, but still, this is so pricey. I was about to buy a PC / Cubase sx combiation, but since somebody of my music store showed me the iMAC 20 " with logic pro 7, again, I'm confused. I was impressed by the usefull plugins (imo, the weak point of cubase).

I think I'll quit making music

                      Re: logic users???

its all about preference imo. i got logic first when i had no clue about music production... i got it used for a sweet deal of $300. so i lucked out. forced myself to learn it and i love it. but imo getting a mac cannot hurt cause you can get ableton/cubase/dp4/logic ... anyone you want. and imo i prefer macs, so i would... but that may not be the case for you.

oh and i work 8-5 (with comuting 7:15-6:00) and use logic, so who fucking cares? you make time for it. you work hard, use your money on what you love. but i would get demos of everything first and then see what you prefer. cause no need spending money unless you need it. so if you really want a mac, buy it and get demos of the apps and see what you like... and from what i have seen logic is the only one you need to pay for, and there is probably a way around that... tho i recommed purchasing the product you ultimately choose. good luck with the decision....

oh almost forgot, university prices on logic are fantastic. have a friend who is still in school get it for you.... look at this shit...
