sad day, always tragic when someone with such a zest for life goes too young

      RIP
i've been stuck by both a catfish and a stingray....on seperate occasions....i dropped the catfish on my foot by accident, and that was really bad...i was puking and passing out...the stingray, when i stepped on it, shot its tail up with such force, i thought i had been electrocuted!!!! felt like an electric shock and being hit with something really hard, almost like it pushed me in the air..i could hear it hit me...anyways, that pain for the next couple of hours was soooo damn intense....im talkin about turning green, pucking, passing out, and the feeling in my leg was way scary, thought it was paralyzing me....stingrays suck, and to get hit in the heart by one? whoah

oh, and that pic above me is lame.....some people always have to try and be the funny man when someone dies....is it soo hard to imagine if this was a family member or a friend of yours, or your husband or wife?? try doing that, maybe you wont come with the wise cracks....
      RIP ~ Steve James

In the freaking heart, no less.

I've been severely bummed since I saw this go across my RSS ticker. I really liked that guy's whole deal. The attitude, the "CRIKEY!!!"s, the balls that guy had....but most of all, the awareness and help that he brought to wildlife conservation and conservation in general. Call him a maniac or reckless or whatever...that dude had more passion in his fingernail than most people have in their entire family. He was genuinely stoked when he saw an animal he liked or had never dealt with before. It was real...not staged, faked reality show bullshit.

        RIP man.

I feel incredibly sorry for his family and friends, all the more so because he didn't have to take the risks he did. I give him credit where it is due but nothing else. He was a great entrepreneur and undoubtly created jobs for others, He did set up a charity that other people where could people donate. He was personally a multimillionaire. The land he bought was his, not donated to anyone.

You didn't read the article in the link did you? There are a lot of people here in Australia who feel the way I do. Somehow I don't think those crocodiles enjoyed having him jump on their back and rip their jaws open, or those snakes liked being whipped around. This isn't the behavior of a naturalist

A lot of what is said here is true. He was a great showman and he did speak up for animals despite the way he treated them, but I think we should acknowledge that he was as flawed a human being as the rest of us. Unfortunately his family are paying the price for his flaws.

in this case, it was not his flaws that did him in...it was 100% a freak accident. the video of his last moments show he made no motion towards the ray...he wasnt touching it at all. it was simply startled and reacted as stingrays do.

people may cricize his methods, but the guy cared about animals. he wasnt just jumping on crocodiles for kicks...he was doing it to transport them or to take their measurments, put in a satellite tracker, ect. granted, he would sometimes grab animals, but it was to show them to the camera and get people involved. that was his method of bringing his audience along with him, and while it may have stressed out the animal a bit, its no worse than the stress they go through daily.

and the guy had *never* been bitten by a poisonous snake. he handled them all the time, and had never been bit. I wonder how many other snake handlers can say that?

i've got a lot of respect for what the guy did, I really don't think the bashing is justified, but thats just my $.02

It wasn't a freak accident. Two things, he should have known better than to startle the animal, and he shouldn't have been close enough for that to happen. Everyone who deals with wild animals knows they can be totally unpredictable.

No, jumping on crocs backs was part of his show, showing to camera is not a valid reason to distress an animal. Also he has been bitten by both snakes and crocs. I read ia saying in a forum somewhere. "The living deserve respect, the dead deserve the truth"

I'm a bit shocked that people think what is happening to his wife and children isn't as important as saying what a great "Bloke" he was.

wrong and wrong. read any articles...he was 3 feet away, and the CAMERAMAN startled the ray, not him. and to die from a stingray is like getting killed by a pogo stick...the odds are like 1 in a billion. it was a freak accident if there ever was one.

secondly, i never said he hadnt been bitten by snakes and alligators...i said poisonous snakes. they showed an interview with him where he clearly stated he had never been bitten by a venemous snake. constricters...sure...he didnt care that much. dood had some pain tolerance.

i love it when people don't know what the hell they are talking about, yet feel inclined to blather on with some air of pretention while mocking a guy who died filming a tv show for kids. you should feel proud there sparky. the living deserve respect, but the dead can't fight back

because we all know his wife and children.

death happens and people cope. we all know that. they didn't even know the guy yet they're going out of their way to say some words about him and you're badmouthing them? if one person's way of coping with the news is saying they respected him, you should shut up and let them honor the dude.
