Terrorist cell taken down in Belgium: food for thought

SUCCESS!!! A large terrorist group planning attacks within Belgium has been taken out. An important victory in the war against terrorism in Europe. However, Al Quaida & C? won't lose any sleep over it. Why? The suspects aren't muslim fundamentalists... They're Belgian citizens with far-right sympathies...

    17 arrested after terror raids

Thu 07/09/06 - 17 suspects have been arrested after a series of house searches in East Flanders and Limburg province. The 17 are all suspected of involvement in a far-right plot to carry out terror attacks within Belgium. A total of 18 addresses were raided including the Leopoldsburg Army Barracks in Limburg province.

Several fire arms were seized as were landmine detonators, explosives and a large quantity of ammunition.

The federal judicial authorities also say that a home-made bomb complete with detonator was also found by police during the operation.
11 of those arrested are military personnel and all 17 are known to subscribe to far-right views.

One of the prime suspects, a soldier based at the Leopoldsburg Barracks in Limburg province is known to be a member of the far-right splinter group "Blood Soil Honour and Faith", which broke away from "Blood and Honour" in Flanders and is believed to be planning to carry out terror attacks in order to destabilise the country.

However, Thursday morning's raids failed to find any firm evidence that an attack had been planned.

The man is also believed to have been involved in illicit arms sales.
All 17 men arrested will appear before an examining magistrate on Thursday evening and Friday.

The examining magistrate will decide whether they are to remain in custody.

Just wanted to share this to illustrate how fucked up our perception of reality can become if we stop thinking for ourselves and let governments and mass media.

My first reaction when I heard the headline on the radio was: "Omg, we're an Al Quaida target too now? Wtf??!!!" But the biggest shock I got was when I heard it was a neo-nazi organisation and not a fundi one. Not because the threat had an extreme right signature, but because I automatically made the association with fundamentalism...

The question I'm asking myself now is: are we concentrating on the problem of fundamentalism that much that we've become blind for other possible threats?

Before you say that I'm overreacting because of a few neo-nazi rednecks with a bad temper who can't be compared to Al Quaida at all, read the paragraph below...

The far-right terrorist network might not be as organised and globally active as the fundamentalist networks, but that doesn't mean we should treat this event like a freak incident.

I remember when Belgium was terrorised during the 80's by the CCC, a far-left group. In a period of two years they carried out 14 bombings, scaring the shit out of the population. However, when the cell was taken down it became clear that it wasn't that big as people had expected: only four members. Later on the same explosives that the CCC had stolen to carry out their attacks were used by Action Directe (french far-left terrorist group) and the Roote Armee Fraktion (german far-left terrorist group).
