obviously dq, you got your major in literature or english. You remind me of my 10th and 11th grade english teacher Mrs. Meyers man was she hot I feel in love with her only to be shot down later that year findin out she was married. I know you're thinking i'm sick but look at all the teachers that are sleeping with their students now, fucking bastards. Anyways, she use to freak out about shit like that all the time. I LOVE YOU MRS. MEYERS.

That is my rant for the day, carry on.
A year or so ago I came across a study on the language kids in high school use these days and like Miroslav suggested hiphop/rnb is one of the most important influences. Especially regarding grammar it's pretty disasterous. As for spelling MSN/chat, text messaging and such are the main reasons kids start writing mistakes and weird abbreviations. Main conclusion: a growing number of kids start using it as "standard language" without even realising it's not correct.

But whatever the explanation, I simply hate it. It's like going to work wearing a shirt you haven't washed or ironed for a month. Making mistakes is human and yes, a language lives and evolves, but that doesn't justify sloppy writing imo...

I really hear you on the hip hop thing.

I really cringe whenever I hear your average thugged out mainstream rapper talking on TV. These people just appear flat out jaw-droppingly stupid to me. Some appear to be unable to even string a coherent statement together. It's not just their poor grammar, the way they stutter and flounder with basic ways to express their own thoughts...which, complexity and content-wise, generally don't seem to be able to extend past the kinds of concepts involved in their MTV videos. And to a whole bunch of young kids, these people are as good as it gets.

Music is essential for the expression of non material ideals and energies. Music colors our surroundings with emanations from the highest vibrational fields. It allows us to escape all limitations in our thinking and very existence.

True. I have nothing against subcultures developing and using own expressions and such, but it should be used within the peer group, not in every day life. What I hate about those "gangstaz" way of talking is that they cover up the fact that they have no message by throwing in a load of meaningless words and expressions.

Now when you talk about kids having problems with expressing thoughts and abstract concepts, I think you have to point the finger at the new media. When I was a kid, there was no internet nor text messaging so if you wanted to contact someone you wrote a letter (or take the phone). Since that letter would take two days to a week to arrive anyway, you took the time to write decently and to translate your thoughts into words. Nowadays we communicate at the speed of electricity and we can no longer wait (like Marshall McLuhan said in the 60's). That in combination with young people reading less books is imo the main reason why it seems like society is breeding a generation of linguistic retards.

Abbreviations like tho', tbh, sth, abt, ... don't irritate me. Writing "youre" instead of "you're" does, especially when native speakers are doing that. English is imo one of the hardest languages to master perfectly. Yes, you might have fewer grammatical rules than let's say in German or in French, but there are heaps of exceptions and particularities. I know a lot of people who think they can write in English, but when you look at their texts... your/youre/you're just adds a little extra fuzzyness to the language. My 2 cents tho'
