no i get it if people want to feel good about themselves and talk to some imaginary villian so that they can feel they have done thier part, but i would assume that if this guy made the effort to choose this thread to come and rant about some thing he was wanting some sort of pat on the back or some sort of reassurance that he is right or some encouragemnet of some sort, he himself first starts of by saying.,..

oh yes i am one who does not stoop down to this level and im all for acceptance and turning a blind eye to things or trying to understand them or whatever, if he is upset sure i can understand there may be reason for him to be.....but to come out and directly malliciously and very crudely say these kinds of things does not reflect anything and im sorry but it only fuels the fire, which is completely unecessary....

i would hop we are here discussing real world issues as oppsed to gossiping and ranting....through our ideas and beliefs and all that good stuff, we can relfect upon ourselves and our lives and our thoughts so that we can better them, and eventually becaome a llittle more aware ....
that is why i think it was utterly useless and completely selfish....for his own 2 minutes of glory to feel better about himself readiing his own piece of writing and thinking he is some action jack doing us all a favour by giving his two bits...im sorry two bits like that i and i think most other people can do without...
if somebody want to talk a load of shit they can post a new topic labelled MY TWO BITS and he/she is welcome to rant and rave utter nonsense...thats why we have the option....

^^ So...let's just just to cut all the BS and take this opportunity to set the record straight...consider these two statements:

        1. significant (but not complete) extremist religious influence in many Middle Eastern societies' regular norms and rules (i.e., Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia) is a genuine current phenomenon.

        yes or no?

        2. assuming you agree to #1... this extremist religious influence harms basic human rights systematically. that is, it harms it necessarily due to its fundamental practices.

        yes or no?

I understand your point, and I agree that my statements can't cover all muslims across the board. I am pointing the finger at mainstream culture in middle eastern muslim societies.

To me, a society's culture is a function of the most commonly norms, rules, and accepted behaviors in that behaviors. It doesn't mean that EVERY single person accepts them all, but it does mean that these are the ones that are generally enforced - through community exclusion, government policies, even police force. Every society has this and it is expressed in the way most people behave, what they do, how they interpret religion in their lives, what the government says and does...and these cultural identities can change bit by bit over time. It can also be heavily influenced by a relatively small influential group that exerts power for an extended period of time.

I have no issue with different cultures around the world. My issue begins where a society's culture leads them to justification of abusing members of their own society. And if you don't believe that any middle eastern societies practice this, then why do the Saudis like to terrorize their own women into submission?

Granted, that event took place in 2002 - was just the first link I remembered - but there are numerous ones like it spread over many years.

I have an even bigger issue when the pervading culture begins to support more aggressive viewpoints on people outside of their own culture.

as do i miro....your right about the saudi's...and im sure they will be other countries in which youll find this sort of oppression and what not....whatever the cause be though...to boil it down to islam is where my objection lies...to boil it down to the religion itself is wrong...there are muslims or people who call themselves muslims....and there is islam....two distinct things...
so yes while these so-called muslims pinch and pillage and cause all sorts of havoc...it is not islam which is at fault...it is them...and sometimes i find that the two bleed into each other for people here...it all just amalgamates and synthesizes into one all encompassing 'thing'...and thats what i object to and have been objecting to for the past few months....
