Re: what is happening in thailand.
Sean, will you please get your brains back out of the fridge?
According to the last census (2000) 94.6% of Thais are buddhists. Muslims are the second religious group in Thailand at 4.6%
WHAT MUSLIM NATION???
And before you start your Religion of Hate Speech once again: the coup happened for two reasons: PM Thaksin and his government were corrupt as hell and tried to abolish the monarchy in order to make Thailand a republic. Hence the coup.
There's no turmoil whatsoever since Thaksin has been called to resign for months and months now. The population supports the coup and the Thai army chief general Sondhi has declared that Thailand will go back to being a democracy asap. The Belgian ministry of foreign affairs didn't even give a negative travel advice up until now. All is calm in Bangkok at the moment.
Oops, you've posted something that doesn't have SHIT to do with islam. Wash your hands and go stand in the corner! A country not belonging to the US or the EU isn't per definition either a fundi nation or a state under attack by muslims. Jeeeeez -
Re: what is happening in thailand.
^^^ sowwy, just a bad morning temper + sick of these 20.000 muslim threads in Politics in which everybody keeps repeating the same ol' shite.
If it isn't about violent muslims, it isn't worth debating and if shit goes wrong somewhere, it's probably the muslims. Feels like I've been eating Big Macs non stop for 3 months. Yes, I'm fed up with it.

Re: what is happening in thailand.
A muslim nation?!?! Seroulsy what the fuck?
That's probably the dumbest thing I've ever read on these boards.
I was reading a massive thread on digg about this, and I'm absolutely stumped about just how little people know about Thailand and what's going on over there right now, but they still feel the need to try and talk politics with everyone else in the thread.
As a result the amount of misinformation thrown around in one thread was mortifying. It got to the stage where people were reading it and picking up the most absurd things as gospel. Such as confusing Thailand with Taiwan, and people throwing around the possibility that it was China entering Thailand on tanks (look at a map fools and work out why this is hardly possible).
Do you really know that little about Thailand to not know they're almost all Buddhist? Sorry for dwelling on it but that's one of the most shocking things I've read on this board.
This coup was rumoured to happen some time in advance, even down to who would action it and when it would happen. I read this in last week's The Economist and their predictions for all of it was absolutely spot on. Was quite impressive actually.
As this coup is happening the rest of Thailand continues as normal, there wasn't even a curfew called last night while it happened. And the military was 'apologising for any inconvenience caused' in their message to the public.
It's hard to say whether or not the majority want this. Some sources say they do, some say they don't. Thaksin has a very large following in the rural areas, and if an election was held before this coup happened he was the easy favourite to stay in power anyway. The coup would've most likely shaken things up a bit, so it will be interesting to see.
thesightless - I suggest you learn something about this amazing country. I was lucky enough to holiday there (Bangkok and Phuket) earlier in the year. Not only is it one of the most beautiful countries on Earth, it contains some of the nicest and most friendliest people on Earth (they don't call it the land of smiles for nothing). Add to that I've never felt safer than any other country on Earth, and you start to see why I'm already plannig my next holiday there in a few months time."If not for Josh Wink, Sasha wouldn't own any Acid except for the paper stuff he dopes chicks with at clubs." - Jenks, 2004Comment

Re: what is happening in thailand.
^^^ at least I'm not the only one having a huge wtf reaction.
You're right Syntax, it's one of the strangest coups ever. There hasn't even a shot been fired. Ok, it's not the most democratic way of handling the situation, but at least it's very interesting what's going to happen next...Comment

Re: what is happening in thailand.
they can hire his skinny ass as a janitor
Nah, no way back for him. The Thai are a bit touchy touchy when it comes to their monarchy. If I remember it correctly it's even forbidden to insult the royals. Let alone hint at a republic...Comment

Re: what is happening in thailand.
if we want to fix the world, we should just make millions of copies of the magna carta, bill of rights, and declaration of indepence and what ever else we can find that european people used back in the day to declare that the people, not the royals or religions, rule themselves by majority, not one groups agenda and then just do fly overs and a mass mailing to making clearing house be proud.your life is an occasion, rise to it.

Re: what is happening in thailand.
Yep, speaking out against the royal family is against the law. But from what I saw while over there, it seemed like most people wouldn't want to. But then again, it is a hard thing to try and guage.
Thaksin is a millionaire in his country. I think he'll be back, I reckon he'll even run in the forthcoming elections (whenever that will be). He is his own rags to riches story, and because of that he has a massive following amoungst the poorer of the population.
He made his money mostly in telecommunications, his telecom went on the be one of the largest mobile operators in Thailand. I'm not sure if he still has a stake in it or not, but it's certainly not something he'll be leaving behind."If not for Josh Wink, Sasha wouldn't own any Acid except for the paper stuff he dopes chicks with at clubs." - Jenks, 2004Comment

Re: what is happening in thailand.
Latest update is that Sondhi is appointed as interim PM and chairman of the council that will rewrite the constitution by the king. He promises a new PM within two weeks and new election next year.
As for Thaksin: he ran off to his house in London. He's free to return to Thailand, but will be prosecuted for corruption.
The capital and South are in favor of the events taking place, but it's still a question how the poorer North will react.Comment

Re: what is happening in thailand.
hay sean..a mistake and well acknowledged...your a good man at heart..so why does it seem like you hate so much sometimes....itsl ike you see something fuked up in the world and then the first thing that comes to mind is muslims...common brother man...you acting like a sheep...no offense at all..your part of the few that give a shit and i fully respect and admire that especially when its so easy to become a sheep..but its probable that a lot of people thought the same...which is kinda sad..
this reminds me of some bust that happened in europe somewhere wher elike some radical home grown non muslim group got busted trying to make some bombs or terrorist activity or whatever, i swear if that would have happened, whos going to deny that tthere would have been another post...smack dab talking about ...''muslims' do it again'.....Comment
