Putting on a perm record sounds to me like a case study. Imagine if this child brings an AK to highschool one day and shoots some people. This "record" sounds more like a "we told you he was going to grow up and do that" The school is more or less protecting itself from "possible" future events. If this kid grows up and shoots someone and the word gets out that a school did nothing when he was 6 and brought a toy gun to school, imagine the backlash that school would endure. It is nothing more than the school making a disclaimer...."yes he brought a toy gun to school at 6 years of age. We took appropriate measures that were in place at the time the incident occured."

The child may not understand why a rule is in place but, a child can understand "do not bring _____ to school.

That is why parents are in place. Most creatures on earth have young that leave very soon after their birth and most creatures never return to their parents for anything.

The distinct difference in humans and animals is our children are dependent on us from birth to death (ours or theirs whichever comes first)

I have 4 children and I know that a child at 6 years old understand boundries (barring mental handicaps). What lesson would that child learn if the school said do not bring item X to school or action X would be taken and when the child brings item X to school the school said OK well maybe this time we will let it slide with just a verbal warning. That child learns that the school does not mean what it says and he will test another boundry and the boundries he tests will grow and grow and he will continue to test them as long as the boundry line keeps changing for his particular case.

understanding and remembering are two different things... don't get me wrong, i agree with everything you're saying here. far be it from me to argue with a dad . the problem is kids are bombarded with so many "rules" nowadays i seriously don't know how even a parent can remember them all. if this child had no previous problems at school then in my mind 10 days is just ridiculous. how does that help a child? it's just overkill imho.

I agree that putting it on a permanant record and the extent of the punishment was a bit much.

I guess I neglected to make note that my problem was with the people who say it is just a toy gun leave the kid alone.

How about just removing those kind of toy guns from the list of forbidden shit anyway? Ridiculous that it's even on the list, and I bet you that the parents had no clue that a TOY was forbidden in the first place. Only the law, which is a rigid rational logic that does not take any circumstances into account, can classify that thing as potentially hazardous.

The logic is that a toy gun is primarily a TOY in the eyes of a kid, not something related to the real guns. This is SO adult perspective thinking, we reason back from real gun to toy gun, for a kid a real gun is something from another reality.
