new Tragically Hip album - World Container

for those of you who are cool enough to be hip fans, i'm sure you already know about the new album, World Container, which is due out October 17th.

    Yer Not The Ocean
The Lonely End of the Rink
    In View
    Fly
    Luv(sic)
    The Kids Don't Get It
    Pretend
Last Night I Dreamed You Didn't Love Me
    The Drop-Off
    Family Band
    World Container

For those who don't know the hip, now is as good a time as any to discover the genius that is Gord Downie, and the rest of the boys.

I've been a hip fan since about '91. They've been a fixture in my life as long as I can remember. One of the few bands that you can come back to again and again, and they NEVER get boring. Phenomenal musicians, inspired lyrics, and a depth that is so uncommon it makes one wish it was less so.

If you're wondering where to start (they have 11 previous albums, plus a best of double disc)...well there is lots to choose from. I'd recommend fully completely, then maybe my name sake (day for night). If that piques your interest, get their live album...followed by every other disc they've ever done in no particular order. Each one is a gem, and will not leave your cd player for weeks on end.

The best part about the hip is seeing them live. Honestly, if you're a fan of music AT ALL, you have to go see them live. even if you don't like them. go. you won't be sorry. I can't sress this enough...live, they are an amazing, beautiful thing. Gord downie is a manic, inspired, crazy person. The band is so tight you'd never know it wasnt prerecorded, except for all the improvised jam sessions.

I just got very lucky, and scored tickets to see them here in Calgary at the end of October at a ~500 person show (a very rare way to see them in Canada). Tickets sold out instantly. I will be rare company. Ohh...and its my 17th time seeing them...and I still get excited as if it was my first gig. You may think thats excessive...but i'm an average fan in that department...there are people who literally followed them from city to city across north america on several tours, just to catch them in all their glory. No song will ever be done the same way twice, so its worth it.

For the love of your experiences in music, if they come anywhere near you on the tour that will inevitably follow this release...GO SEE THEM. this may be one of your last chances...they've been around a *long* time...who knows when they'll retire. I'd be absolutely devastated to get into this band and have them retire without ever catching them live.

Thats all from me, i'll shut up now.

you can listen to their albums there, granted the sound quality is crap.

I used to dig the Hip when i was in college. Saw them live once. And Jeff, after all these years, since MS1.0, i just now put two and two together about your MS name, "Day For Night" which coincidently, is the last album from the Hip i bought. Got into electronic music shortly after that, and never kept up with them. Have Trouble @ the Henhouse too.

you should pick up phantom power, which was the release right after trouble @the henhouse.

day for night is also a camera technique used to take film clips shot in the day, and make them appear as if shot in the night. i liken it to alot of us who end up living at night, due to the club scenes late hours, but pretending its day time....sorta the reverse concept.

ok this is out. go buy it. downie is absolutely fierce on this one...giving it all for sure.

a sample of the lyrics, from "The Drop-Off"

You don't go swimming past the drop-off or else
The fates are amok and spun,
measured and cut and the past is meant to please us
Yer a comet from the earth in a kiss alive shirt
              saying "holy fuck, its jesus!"

              yeah, i love this band...
