For a new job I will have to go through a drug and alcohol test. I know how they do the drug screening, but was wondering what they do for the alcohol testing. What are they looking for and how far back can they detect alcohol in your system? Can anyone here shed some light on the matter?

What they look for: ethanol levels in your blood
How they do it: blood testing
How long can they go back: depends on how much you drank. The liver breaks down 90% of the alcohol (ethanol) in your body (the other 10% is being exhaled or pissed out, so much for Kamal's 6 liters of water) at a certain rate. You can read more about this rate here. Don't worry, if you didn't drink the day before, no way in hell that they will detect something.

I used to do alcohol and drug testing compliance for UPS employees. What they'll most likely give you is a breath alcohol test. 24 hour clock to beat here. some guy just got picked at work the other day. they sat him down and had him do some alcohol/drug test. he failed with flying colors. i guess he took an extra hour lunch and had six or seven drinks. when he got back, sat down and yelled "fuck" to the customer. everyone heard it.dead, yet alive.Comment

the most likely way they will test you for alcohol is a cotton swab in your mouth. it is to test for the last few hours. employers do not care if you drank the night before. they want to know if you drank today.Greatly rejoicing in following God as a freedom not a choice.Comment
