Funny: I've never even considered ipod a candidate for my music...I totally despise that closed system for music to be honest. Portable music is about freedom for me, but Apple wants to curb that in favour of their profits....no way. For personal audio it's still Sony for me, somehow they have the phattest bass on their gear and the sound quality is pretty damn good. Though I have a Creative MuVo right now which does the job perfectly.

the argument that the iPod's downfall will be because of its proprietary format is absolute bunkem. there is nothing stopping you from ripping your own CDs to MP3 and sticking those on your iPod.

"You can also open a protected AAC with Amadeus II (v3.6.1) and save it
as mp3 from there. (The mp3 encoding will be slower but a bit better
                quality than with iTunes.) "

                amadeus is at: www.hairersoft.com

"Yeah, to do it with a protected file, the easiest way is probably to
import it to iMovie, then export it from there. iMovie ignores the
protection. Or you can burn it to a CD, and rip that. "

do you not suffer loss of audio quality by doing the conversion?

you definitely do if you burn it to cd, rip it, and then recompress to mp3.
