Well, it is certainly the biggest, no argument from me on that, but I'm not just talking about raw numbers. I'd bet that on a per capita basis, i.e., fans as a ratio of the population, St. Louis has you beat cold.

For the record, I basically lived in Manhattan for the entire 2002 season, so I'm not just talking purely out of my ass here -- I actually have a basis for comparing the two.

using that comparision i hope every city outside of LA beats us. we have about 11 million people living in a 50 mile circumference of the stadiums.

        Re: baseball

        weather update:

As for the rainy St. Louis weather prior Game 4, Associated Press reporter Jim Salter had this mid-afternoon update:

Fans attending Game 4 of the World Series at Busch Stadium can expect to get wet, but the game may go on.

In a postseason that has already seen its share of foul weather, rain was forecast for Wednesday night in St. Louis, where the Cardinals host the Detroit Tigers. But contrary to projections from a day earlier that called for a potential downpour, the updated forecast sounded like something the teams could play through.

"We're expecting a fairly persistent, light rain or drizzle throughout the game," said Mark Britt, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in suburban St. Louis. "There could be some brief moderate rain.

"Overall, it looks like kind of an ugly night -- nothing severe." He projected total rainfall during the game of one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch.
It looks like shit out, but we may get this done after all...

ouch. he is wrong though, a good pitching performance is better than a 7-5 game. keeps the tension high, and leaves you waiting and waiting..and frankly, it is the best pitched series in a long time. since the david cone yanks IMO

Gary Sheffield was told Wednesday that the New York Yankees will pick up his $13 million option for next season, according to a newspaper report.

                  Re: baseball

At the risk of sounding New York-centric, the interest would be greater with one of the New York teams (one, but not both, because I firmly believe the last thing this country wanted to see was another Subway Series). Having one New York team gives everyone else a rooting interest.
greater for who? new yorkers maybe. hey buddy, ny didn't make it, go suck on your thumb, asshole.

i think this world series is fantastic. that's the problem with baseball fans today, everybody wants to see a homerun, when baseball is really about pitching. 1-0 games are the best.

i love that NY and the east coast isn't in it anymore. it weeds out the fair weather fans.

we both sat online at 9am when ticket sales went on, and tried for 30 minutes to get in to buy tix...didn't make it. been watching it from the loft. was funny, when the national anthem was over game 3, the jets flew over, and i'm watcing it on tv, and hear the jets go over on the television and in the air and then watch them shoot past my window, talk about surround sound.

NY are great fans, not just fair weather(8 milion ppl this year, yanks sold out every game), and i agree with you on the subway series. it would only give US juice, this is better for the country as a whole. but these shitty teams on the national scale arent helping. it is so far the lowest rated series ever.

                              Re: baseball

                              OK, need some advice here.

I have tickets for tonight's game, which I had because I wanted to see the potential clincher. With the rainout last night, my tickets are now for game 4 rather than 5. It could get rained out, which would set everything back, as far as I know.

A friend of mine is offering me a standing room ticket for tonight, and I have an option to swap my ticket for tonight (which is in a seat) for the makeup game. Taking that would guarantee that I got to see the last game played here, but there's a real good chance, I think, that the game will be rained out, meaning I'd be watching Game 5 in SRO.

                              I'm torn. Thoughts?
