            Re: baseball

what a game! Eckstein was playing out of his mind, going 4 for 5, and Rolen was hitting the ball well, too. Really, though, just good small ball and taking advantage of every opportunity the Tigers (or the weather) gave them.

Busch was pandemonium after the game. Dogs and cats, living together, the whole nine yards. Can't wait for tonight (assuming this rain clears)...

definitely going out tonight to catch the game near the stadium.

I haven't been to Paddy O's all season, but couldn't resist last night. It wasn't as impossibly crowded as I would have expected -- guess the crop of bars that have popped up around the stadium, and the fact that they basically charge in-stadium prices for beer, have diluted the crowd some. Still a good time, though.

Have you been to Shannon's yet? It looks cool, but I'm always coming from the opposite direction and haven't had the chance. Might check that out tonight, unless tradition once again takes hold and I end up at Paddy O's after the game...

I was thinking about this, too. He is a factor to the extent that he is probably going to be a baserunner most of the time he comes to the plate -- he's obviously intentionally walked quite a bit, but there are also a number of "unintentional" intentional walks he draws as well, where they just won't throw him anything worth swinging at. As a result, despite his disappointing batting average, he led the team in runs scored in the Divisional Series and the LCS, and he's second only to the resurgent Rolen in runs scored in the World Series.

That said, he's been in a number of situations where he's had runners in scoring position and they've had to challenge him, and he hasn't come through. That's disappointing. Good news, though, is that we've demonstrated that we don't need him to have a big game to win. It's our pitching staff and a team effort that have carried us to this point.

                          Re: baseball

From a strategy standpoint, having poohole in the 3 hole changes the makeup of the lineup wether he's murdering the ball or striking out. Pitchers know what he's capable of, and that fear creates all sorts of problems for Detroit, and lifts the Cards. As you said, they're still pitching around him, thankfully the rest of the order is picking it up. Heard Dusty Baker say on ESPN "If you lose, fine, you lose, but you don't let their best player beat you." (talking about pujols in the nlcs)

                            Re: baseball

yes, but in big games, players like albert and arod need to be able to hit a pitchers pitch in a tough spot, when they arent being walked. he, like alex, hasnt done it yet. but from our end, the pitchers knew alex was LOST, so they didnt walk him.

outside of this year, they are essentially the same player. albert hits a little higher average, arod is better in the feild and on the basepath. other than that, they have fairly identical numbers and performances in the postseason.
