so yesterday the landlord shows up to tell me the girl downstairs says my music is too loud. i mean i disconnect the subwoofer at night, what could i be doing wrong. one day she asked me to turn it down, at 6:30 p.m., because she had to study.ok, but now she just calls the landlord to come break my balls about it. i want to be respectful to the neighbor, but i am not going to stop listening to my music.
any suggestions how to minimize sound traveling through the walls. i don't think this girl has to much tolerance for any sound(fuckin bitch), so any materials used to dampen sound would be ideal. i don't want her to call the law on me next, as that could be really bad for me.

...move or invest in wireless headphones. she's not going anywhere and there's really nothing you can do in (i'm guessing here) an apartment complex building or some newer type structure.... if you have a room that doesn't touch any part of her apartment put your soundsystem there and close the door... other than that you're screwed... not trying to bum you out but because you a. don't own the space and b. it costs a fortune to soundproof something your only alternative's (other than super low level or not listening at all) are above... imo.

just moved in, so i ain't going to move. soundproofing, to some extent, would be worth it to me. for the record, she is downstairs from me, the other neighbors are loud and don't care.
i would like ideas on soundproofing. like what materials to use, where to put them(on the wall,under the speakers,ect.) my current setup has little satellite speakers, and a sub. i know the sub is a big problem, so i disconnect it late at night, but i think this bitch might even be hearing the other speakers(the front Left and Right channels). also, this i an older building made into 4 apartments(ie.not a "complex").

Geoff is right: soundproofing your room will cost a shitload more than a wireless headset. Moreover, it will cost you less effort.

However, if you really want to limit the sound escaping, the cheapest way is to put curtains on your walls. I'll explain why... It's a good idea to switch off the woofer since bass sound travels omnidirectional (soundwaves progress bubble like). The mid and high frequency soundwaves travel unidirectional (like the rays from a flashlight). The mid/hi soundwaves will reflect on your walls and (partly) find their way to the floor. Curtains will absorb a part of the sound and will limit the reflection to a great extent. The heavier the cloth, the better the isolation. Don't hang 'em directly against the wall, but leave a free space of about half an inch. Putting a rug on the floor will eliminate some noise as well.

This is the only way if you don't want to invest in foam acoustic pannels which are expensive as hell. Don't let yourself be fooled by those idiots who think egg cartons on the wall will solve your problem (that's a classic misconception).

Another thing you can do is the following: go out and buy a pair of foam buds to put in your ears. Knock at your neighbor's door and apologize for the inconvenience. You've already invested in soundproofing and other measures, but you're worried it will not be enough, given the materials used in the building and the thickness of the ceiling/floor. That's why you got her those buds: if there's still too much noise, she can put them in her ears and be able to study in peace. If you put on this "I'm so sorry and I want to help" attitude, I'm sure the bitch will swallow like a Kazach prostitute...

Neighbors suck. I've been having a cat at my apt for three years (even though the contract says I can't keep pets) and the landlord knew about it. But my new upstairs neighbors are animal haters, called to police and got the landlord to drag me to court. That's why I'm moving out of this shithole.

Anybody ideas for some sweet payback? Wanna get back to the fuckers upstairs and my landlord. Anything goes, just spill your evilness!

headphones are fine for midnight and later, but up till that time of night, i want to be able to use my damn stereo system. i will not put up with this shit, when the other neighbor(the one living directly next to her stays up all night drunk and bustin coke(hes cool at least)
i mean he hooked me up with his HOT roommate 2 weeks ago.

i feel guilty now about playing my music at 8p.m., thats bullshit. i don't know how hard ass this bitch is goin to be. and like i said, i am willing to spend a few hundred bucks to absorb some of the sound. materials and ideas please.......

topshelf your appartment (take a shit in the top part of the toliet).
hide cans of tuna opened and wrapped in tin foil all around the house.
go to the phone box and unplug the phone (happened to me once), or cut some wires.
if they have wireless internet, hack into in and put a password on it.
put neighbors on tons of porn mail lists, not e-mail but paper mail. use their phone number too if you can.
slash their tires. just get some wire cutters and cut off the nub you fill the tires with.
ummm, take a dump in the basement, esp if the neighbors use it, and hide it well.

OHH, here's an idea. since they dont like animals. buy a shit ton of crickets from the pet store and let them loose in the house when you leave... thatd be awesome. same can be done with mice or any other creature they would be sick by.

Here in Ontario I believe the sound restriction isn't until 11pm in apartments. Check your states tenant act to see what your rights are so if she complains again you can shove it back in her face

i don't think she was mad about the early evening thing, i did have the music going till like 3am(sub disconnected,but kinda loud). i mean it was Diggers Transitions cd, what am i supposed to do, not finish it. Also, my big(270lbs.) friend and his equally large girlfriend were over. They displace the floor whenever they move,plus she is a loud talker. Still, now that the neighbor has a beef, i don't want her calling the fuckin landlord just cause i play my music at all(even at like 7-8pm).

so i bought some carpet and this foam/rubber shit designed for people to stand on all day(made to be comfortable to you feet/back). it is quite thick, so i put it down under all speakers and sub, with carpet on top. this SHOULD help,but if anyone doesn't think so, let me know. this rubber shit should absorb alot of the sound. i am more worried about her getting pissed even with the sub disconnectd. i don't know what is "acceptable" to her. i will probally go do the diplomatic thing, and apologize and compromize with her. i mean the fact she asked me to turn it down at 6:30pm once, i am worried that she might be a real pain in the ass about volume no matter what speakers or time of day.

yeah i was planning the phone number thing. that is reasonable. if she really wants to be a cunt about it, i will take it very far. like i said, the guy that lives next door to her is a really loud, obnoxious coke head who parties alot. if he can do that, i (a reasonable pot head,at worst) can compromize with her(sound proofing, phone number, ect.).
