I'll agree with many here that they both have their places, but I'd like to add another facet to the question:

What about cds vs. studio sets (ie. promos, essential mix, kiss100, etc.)?

I prefer Live Sets! Studio mixed cd's are more of a collectors item for me. Somehting I would want to purchase and go back to every now and then.

Live sets are much more "deeper" in regards to tracks being played. Most of the time the "unknowns" are what makes those sets what they are and hunting them down is what gives me the biggest boner!, once found and purchased is when I ejaculate!

I love smelling that rare discontinued vinyl knowing it came from the other side of the planet.

I don't really care if it's a live set, studio set, or mix comp... If it's good, it's good. Voiceovers and MC's do suck I admit, but some of my favorite mixes to listen to are live. usually buy mix comps for the collection factor, but I don't listen to them as often as live or studio sets.

Re: Mix CDs v. live sets

              First off, great thread.
i like both, but i like a mix cd that is representative of a djs live sets, GU would be a good example. i like hearing a live set with tracks that were on the djs current released mix, because it gives it "live" credability(like transitions and the WMC set of Diggers this year). i have a lot of livesets that will stay in my cd case, but most are not as timeless as a mix album is. both serve a slightly different purpose, but a mix should showcase what a dj should sound like live also. live sets(long ones especially) fill in the gaps mix comps leave out so they really should compliment each other. mix comps have more "staying power" though as they are ment to be a djs album. some timeless examples, that also represent their time, are NE 1(both cds, especially cd2), GU06,GU13,Bedrock 1,ect. those amongst many others, do represent live sets, as well as being timeless albums also. i really think the liveset is also good if the dj does not have a released mix comp. i am going to stop, because i can not posibly type all the thoughts i have on this subject.

imo, sets are more in the moment and a dj doing his thing ... a cd is going to be out there

Re: Mix CDs v. live sets

If DJs we know make a mixed CD they make it so people talk about them, they can make an album tour and promote themselves better and get more bookings. Our artists (besides a few exceptions) can never live from the sales of CD's or tracks in opposite to mainstream music artists. Problem nowadays with CD's is that the Internet is available and if you are a true maniac, you know at least half of the tracks on mixed compilations long before they were released. DJ's play unreleased tracks, people listen to unreleased tracks and of course rip unreleased tracks illegally. In the other corner, you have the CD industry which needs to clear every song that's released on a mix comp because of copyrights and there is a waiting time because of the release politics in the different labels and more reasons that take too much time between making the compilation and releasing it.

I loved mixed compilations when I had no Internet but nowadays when I get the freshest tracks mixed through live sets, I don't rave about too much mix compilations anymore. Some are still hot but most are only okay, not more. When I buy CD's I buy most of the time artist albums because more thought and passion goes into them and it is not only a survival and promotion strategy. Exceptions granted for sure.

                            Let's continue this discussion then...

                            1) Will mixed CD's or live set recordings ever kill one another off?

                            2) Are there so many DJ mixed sets (live recording or mixed CD) that their sentimental value is practically worth nothing?
                            NOT YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
