    Mix CDs v. live sets

Between mixed CD's which you must pay for (GU, Balance, etc...) and live set/promo recordings; which format has the advantage?

With mixed CD's you can get a true gem such as some of the GU's which have a sentimental place with many us. That sort of bond is rarely, if ever, created with a live set recording. However on the other hand, live sets are unrestricted in terms of licensing, length, cost and time in between releases. You only have to look at the Promos & Recommendations section to see it taking place.

So it comes down to this... which format has the advantage? If live sets have the advantage does that eventually mean that mixed CD's will not be sold? How about the vice versa?

Re: Mix CDs v. live sets

I think you hit the nail on the head. There are some compilations that i've had for 5~6 years, that I still listen to on a regular basis. I definitely can't say the same about live sets.

Still, the average compilation has a shelf life of about 6 months before I've moved on to something else. There are only about a dozen or so djs who can make a comp that keeps me interested for more than a year. wish there were more....

Livesets are great for different reasons...1) you usually get to hear a more 'high-energy' set. most djs don't release quite as bangin' stuff on their comps as they play in their livesets. They're free, which is always nice. And you get to hear the dj how they really are...no computer aided mixes to fall back on.

      i prefer live sets.
dj has a higher risk of making mistakes, so he has to show his best skills, and compared to mix cds, tracklist usually comes out according to the crowd, location, time and other variables.

      but again. that's just me

completely agree with that as long as the sound quality is top. I don't mind hearing some cheers in the background, but if it's no line recording, fuck it. Also, if there's an MC yapping through the set, fuck it double.

It is good knowing that live sets were actually played to a crowd in a club rather than mixed in a studio. However it is usually mix cds that become the favourites that I go back to again and again..

i think it comes down to whether its a good mix cd or not. mix cds that get shelfed quickly are no different from a live set. so all these mix cds that come out that are "good" arent worth the money, cause you can download the a live set instead. its the djs that can make times mixes are when you always go back to them, that is the proper difference.

Re: Mix CDs v. live sets

I don't know if i can separate them so definitively. I think for a dj to release a REALLY good cd compilation, he has to have done his fair share of live sets. Livesets is what creates the connection between the listener and dj I believe. During the year, if you're listening to livesets reguarly from a dj you like, and then he releases a mix compilation... I think you have a certain connection with that compilation and appreciate it more (providing it is good of course). I'll use Digweed's Transistions compilation as an example, because that is my fav mixed cd of the year to date. Obviously he has alot of sets floating around, and Ive listened to practically all of them... I think without having done so, and listening to Transistions it wouldn't have the same effect. Its not a bias, its an appreciation to see how he works different styles into a piece of work that is "professional" and unique.

Of course I dont think this is the case for everyone, and may not apply to all artists... but atleast for the ones I listen to, it does. And I'd hate to see the day when there is one or the other and not both. They're both equally good for differents reasons, and in my opinion... compliment eachother.

there are greats and shits in both formats.
i kinda prefer mix cds that are put together to be a lasting journey, but great sets = party time.

Nothing is more annoying! Especially the ones in a foreign language!

Both have their places in my opinion. I really like to listen to the live sets to get an understanding of how the DJ builds & develops a set. It's hard to pack that into a mix CD. But sometimes you just can't beat a well planned & programmed mix tape.

if it has the proper tracks in it and it has the flow, then any type of mix is good for me
