Re: Setting up a home made DVR

Do you have those parts in an already built box? If so you can boot off of something like a knoppix cd and check for all of the hardware compatability. I would't be afraid at all of the soundblaster or the dvd burner being uncompatible, you can always use the generic-mmc driver that comes with cdrecord / growisofs to burn discs. I have used 3 or so different cd burners at home with different linux builds with no problems. and i think the dvd burner i have now is tdk (i dont remember) and have had no problems.

the only think iffy would be the 6800 ultra, that sounds kind of newer, but i have a nvidia geforce4 ti4600 and it works just fine with the linux driver that is supplied by nvidia. it looks like since yours is the geforce series also that the same driver i am using works for yours too:

i have it running in 1680x1050 with my widescreen monitor w/o any problems, as this is what i use to post to ms all the time when i am at home and listening to mp3's, etc..

you might want to try and download this livecd, i am not sure if it has the drivers built in or not, but it will probably show you some cool eye candy:

It shows off the new compiz desktop stuff which has some neat graphic effects, shown below:
