Production Thoughts on USB interfaces...

I'm looking to get my studio really going, but until i step up to an imac. i've got a toshiba laptop i'm running live on and am doing pretty well.

I'm looking to upgrade my studio with a USB interface and some BX-8's and other hardware...but was wondering if anyone on here has had good experiences with usb interfaces like the edirol brand or the m-audio interfaces. i'm thinking of getting the new tascam for 149.00 over at musicians friend and going from there until i can step up to a nice motu interface.

any thoughts on this matter?

why not a firewire interface?

try getting something used on cragslist / ebay. I have a M-audio firewire 410. its cheap... but yeah if i had money i'd go with motu.

i'm just trying to make some good music until i can get a computer with a firewire interface. I think i'm just going to go for the new tascam, no latency and two inputs, midi and other little things, about all I need for now...and @ $145.00

Yeah I do need to sell more shirts, but that will come.

I looked at the new tascam stuff which is pretty nice, but NI just came out with Audio Kontrol and it looks pretty crispy.

Do you have a keyboard yet? I just got the M-Audio Axiom 25 and I love it. The 49 comes with more control via some extra faders and clip launch buttons, but the 25 is nice and small with a $179 price tag. About the interface, I have been trying to get one also. Right now I have an iMac G5 and I'm running Live 5 light and Garageband. I record most of my DJ sets directly into the computers sound card from my mixer. Its nice to have if you are running good monitors but not neccessary. Let me know what you wind up getting.

yeah i've had an oxygen 8 for quite a while now. Just trying to get a good USB interface...probaby going to go for the new tascam one until i get my mac...then i can get a firewire interface.

Jeff, I just picked up a Lexicon Alpha Studio, USB interface at Sam Ash for $120

It has: 2x balanced XLR mic ins
2x 1/4 in. line ins (which I'm using in from my mixer for dj sets)
2x 1/4 in. line outs
L/R RCA outs (going to my new BX5a's)
Overall I'm very happy with this peice. Especially for the price! And all 24 bit.

I just recorded a new set using it today and my sets have never sounded this good. What a difference! So far I would give it my recomendation.

Why the hype about firewire? Why not just settle for USB2? It is after all a little bit faster. Or will you be running multiple "connections"?
