there's also all sorts of theory that says that our sense block ourselves from the true unirverse out there. a lot of artists publicly admit taking drugs such as mescalin to "open these doors of perception" - term used by William Blake. Jim Morisson called his group th doors after that (he used to like LSD and mescalin. Huxley, author of a brave new world was also quite active on these, hence his concept of Soma driven society...
