Re: Stay away from Jenks...
Regarding the article- I don't feel that threatened in STL. You definitely have to be aware, but i think that goes for almost any city. At nighttime downtown, i don't ever sit at a stoplight next to another car. I leave a car length ahead or behind, and am always conscious of what's happening around me at all times. But i imagine i'd do that if i lived in New York too. I see a lot of broken car windows tho, no matter where you are in the city. A lot of those violence numbers come from North City, which is pretty much a war zone. I drove through north city once on accident..was running red lights the whole time, kept telling myself, "Don't stop...just keep on going..." i knew i wouldn't get pulled over by the police for running lights, because the police don't even go to north city. lol. Kinda sad really, i love this city, always have, but it constantly has that black eye of violence every time one of these reports come out.Comment

Re: Stay away from Jenks...
east st. louis is like a warzone, but it's honestly nothing compared to the under-appreciated north side. The thing is, though, this is kinda deceptive. When they do these rankings, they do it based upon the county in which the city is situated, i.e., the city and the surrounding area. St. Louis is unusual amongst large cities in that is its own county -- St. Louis County, where all the burbs are, is actually a totally separate county and therefore not factored into the study. If you were to redo the study looking only at the city limits only of all the cities -- or taking St. Louis County into account, it would come out differently.
The other thing is that despite this ranking, I really don't think of St. Louis as unsafe, and I live about as close to downtown as you can be and still expect to get a freestanding house. Jenks actually lives downtown, and I would imagine he'd back me up on this. I'd say this is ranking is all based upon the living hell that is North St. Louis City.Comment

Re: Stay away from Jenks...
North > East. East for the most part is just really run down and abandoned. North is run down, populated, and dangerous. Shame too because there is actually alot of nice architecture and homes in north city from the old days of stl. My friend is a forclosure broker here in the city, and says there are tons of mansion style houses in north city, much like the ones that go for 1-2 million in the central west end...but can't get 10k in the north.Comment

Re: Stay away from Jenks...
LOL, I actually got lost in North City on my wedding day -- was trying to get from Windows to 70 to run something back out to the county, and I figured if I just drove north a few blocks, I'd run into 70 eventually. Not quite that easy. Suffice it to say, I saw some shit I hadn't expected to see in broad daylight that day, and the whole time I was thinking, "My wife is going to kill me if I get shot out here or something..."Comment

I dunno. I think it just slowly got out of hand. Nelly is from University City, though, which is directly west of the City in St. Louis County and is really quite nice. That said, I've got a bunch of friends that work in the prosecutor's office and they've seen his rap sheet -- I don't know the particulars, but he's not as squeaky clean as you might think...Comment

Take Broadway north sometime, (during the day of course), there is actually a lot of buildings like washington ave, that would be perfect rehabs, except for the zip code.Comment
