          Hey mate,

I'm a complete noob to this stuff. Can you give me some insight in to what sort of returns these funds give? In percentage per annum or something like that, then I'll understand it!

Also, is there a similar offering on vanguard.com.au?

you can get 2-3% returns simply by rolling over and compounding short term CD's to be honest...

there really isnt a minimun to put in, so to say, but certain funds will ask to maintain a balance.

Re: how can i make my money grow?

Alright guys, here is a breakdown of the investment industry for you: If you are looking to make money quick and double it fast then you should consider the options highlighted above: Ebay, buying playstation 3s and selling them on Ebay when they come out, there is also this website where you lend money to other people (basically loan sharking).
Seriously, if you want an stable return with no risk, then put your money on a savings account, but do not do it on a brick and mortar bank, do it online (HSBC has the best rate along with INGDirect and Emigrantdirect.com). Currently 5% a year and you don’t have to worry about anything.
If you are willing to wait a little bit longer then you can invest in CDs or treasury bonds (treasurydirect.com).
However, if you are really serious about putting your money to work then I will suggest the following:
-Sharebuilder (You can start with as little as 100 bucks) and commissions are cheap (4 bucks). You can buy stocks or ETFs. ETFs are basically like index funds and will replicate portions of the market. With 2000 grand you can actually buy a good array of ETFs. I would recommend getting exposure to US, developed international markets and to Emerging markets. Some tickers you can try are: EEM (Emerging), EFA (Developed), NFO (US), IWV (US), and don’t forget your exposure to energy and basic materials (IYM, IYE). The beauty about ETFs is that you can construct a portfolio in any way you want and can get as risky or as conservative as you want. With an ETF you can take sector bets, country bets, style bets and regional bets, and best of all they are extremely cheap to buy. This is obviously a long term strategy and don’t expect to double your money in only a few months. Be persistent and stick to your allocation.
-If you want to buy mutual funds, be aware that there are more than 9000 out there, so it can be a pretty daunting task, especially if you are not in the financial field. Few things to keep in mind: Don’t get trick into buying load funds (buy only no load mutual funds with a reasonable expense ratio - not higher than 1.5%), don’t be tricked by past performance, and make sure you diversify. If you want more specific names, feel free to send me a PM. If you are going to buy any of these, you can open an account with Scotrade, they only charge you 7 bucks for any trade and have a variety of mutual funds. You can also try Etrade, Fidelity of Vanguard. You can get some descent mutual funds for 2500 and there are some good ones for less, but you would have to buy them directly from the mutual fund family website or you can start with your 2000, but you would have to put it into an IRA or Roth IRA account. If you feel adventurous and want to learn more about mutual funds, www.morningstar.com is a good resource.
Another thing you can do is trade currency, you can open an account with as little as 500 bucks, but you have to know what you are doing, otherwise you can get killed…
                  Enjoy seeing your money grow!
Infinity is just a state of mind..

Re: how can i make my money grow?

^^trading currency=Forex (Foreign Exchange)...which can be a good way to grow capital, but as mentioned, you need to really sit down and do some studying on it or else you'll get murdered pretty quickly (consider that Forex trades $2 trillion daily and is virtually 24/7 6 days a week which is kind of cool...but there's definitely a chunk there for many to pursue)

I've been pursuing trading at the moment and trading minis which is more to start ($2500-$3000 minimum vs. the $500 mentioned above)...just bought into a class system that's new, but the trader running it was one with good intentions and one that looks like it would work out very nicely based on backtesting...and so far so good; I'm confident I can run with this long-term and not blow up my account and fail out like so many others do (because of greed, emotion, lack of knowledge, etc.)...it's actually a pretty cool thing...would like though to move into Forex down the road, as I'm up more often at 3am then I am at 10am

Re: how can i make my money grow?

Trading (FX, stocks, commodities whatever) is a good plan and can yield quick profits which is what u said u are after, but dont expect to be profitable for quite some time and remember that over 90% of traders fail and only about 5% actually become consistently profitable. If u choose to pursue this route then it may be a good idea to start by spread betting. Can start nice and small that way and while im not sure about over the pond, in the UK all profits are free from capital gains tax..

                      Good luck

what prieto said. he knows more about securitization than i do, my approach comes from accounting and economics, with some effciency management, but the market ins and outs, clearly can be explained better. im not a trader or broker, and i wont claim to be. i handle capital investment in business. i.e. buying in b4 stock issuance.

i am a financial adviser for a very large insurance company. I would recommend getting a professional, like myself, to put you into a nice deversified portfolio of mutual funds. If you are a little older(over 30), i would recommend an IRA funded by an annuity. This would be for retirement of course. The mutual funds are more liquid,as in more accessable when you may need it, and they are great long term investments that outperform bank CDs or a savings account. just make sure the adviser you go through sells you Class A shares, otherwise he or she is charging you a residule sales charge. If you need any further advice, please hit me up on here, I will be more then happy to help.
