yes, we wont learn the pitfalls if we dont try. and it most likely (95%) will end up benifitting man, both in human health and cloning applications for the worlds food sources, possibly allowing us to breed large amounts of animals and plants vital to sustain the planet

nothing right now makes me angrier than to see these conservative people against it because they are caught up in the "omg!! its potentially a life wtf!!bbq!!111". stem cell research is the way forward, and america better realize it before some other country gets a leg up on those stem cell patents.

Re: Stem Cell Research - Should it be allowed?

I read last month (somewhere on RSS) that stem cells aren't all they're hyped up to be, and there's another type of cells which can do what stem cells do, and better. Sorry for the lack of info. But I say anything that can cure diseases and offer the kinda potential that stem cells do, all the better.

Re: Stem Cell Research - Should it be allowed?

anyone ever think of the cost feasibility? How long the procedures will take? The costs to transplant organs? The surgery teams required to do it? The fact that US private insurance premiums are exceptionally high and the probability that medicare and medicaid won't be able to cover it?

maybe we should kill babies to save lives instead of safeguarding interests.

So how much money goes into research on new weapons, warfare, sexual abstinence programmes (that's $50 mil dollar as you know)? Yes, stem cell research costs money, but it serves a cause. As for transplantation and what not: that's the same as the classic procedures.

I'm kinda in the middle on this one. On one side I think it's bullshit to forbid it because of the reasons stated by the conservatives/religious groups and production of organs would be a great answer to the shortage of donors. Not to mention the diseases that could be cured...

However, the last thing is also what worries me: just imagine that we'll be able to cure cancer and AIDS and add another 5 to 10 years to the life expectancy of man. Nice thoughts no? Ye well, untill you considder the following:
                  - we're already at 120% of the eco capacity of this planet with the way we consume and polute.
                  - social security and pensions (especially in Europe) are crumbling under the growing group of senior citizens who profit from it versus the lingering group of young active people who pay for it.

In other words, I don't think we should fuck around too much with the natural balance mechanisms mother nature has built in. And yes people, a number of relatives of mine already died of cancer and my mum has had breast cancer, so don't give me any melodramatic shit: when your time has come you've gotta go, such is life.

As for Sean's point to breed plants and animals that would sustain life on earth: bollocks to that. First of all the ecosystem is far too complex for us to start introducing new species: we don't know what the effects will be, so it's like playing Doctor Frankenstein. Apart from that the idea itself is ridiculous: we shouldn't breed life that survives us, we should adapt so that we don't destroy life as it is. Morphing the planet into a place that suits humans (and human consumption) the best is arrogance ad ultimum.

Stem cell research is helping to cure people with cancer, etc. it's not like they are doing just because, it has a purpose.

military spending and defense spending, that pic being the star of david that a certain vile group made ppl wear in an effort to control the world. was just saying that we also have to spend the money, as well as on research to save us.
