Re: Christmas Rant
I think that Christmas is a bit of a joke there days. There have been decorations in pubs in London since Sept because they have been advertising for companies to book their Christmas lunches as early as possible, and of course have to stick an obligatory tree up and some tinsel to get you in the mood!?! And now it is pretty much standard in all of them
Also, got back from clubbing quite some time ago at about 7am and was watching cartoons on mute with tunes , and the amount of adverts aimed at kids/parents for fucking expensive toys and games etc with a christmasy theme thrown on for good measure (just to get the kids extra excited months before xmas) was ridiculous. I feel so sorry for less well off parents who cannot even begin to think about buying a toy for ?59.99 or something like that.
Its all just become a load of commercialised bollox. And after all that, its over in a day
as for television marketing toys towards kids, this is one of the downsides of free-market capitalism. the alternative is to increase the regulations on what can be advertised, how much, etc., which to me is worse. i'd love commercial free tv as much as anybody else, but then who pays for tv? instead, just don't let kids watch it too much.
so, the main point is, don't let others tell you how you can celebrate your holiday. if they want to buy into all that crap, let them. if it is about gifts, fine; if it is about Christ, fine.
and don't let anybody tell you that Christmas is offensive. i don't know where this idea came from, this switching from "merry Christmas" to "happy holidays" nonsense. the hypocracy is overwhelming; without Christmas there would be no holiday event, no shopping, no "season", no decorations. The other holidays from other religions/backgrounds at this time of year have gained popularity only because of the Christmas gift-giving season. Not to denegrate other holidays, but to attempt to downplay the main event simply to avoid toe-stepping doesn't make any sense at all.
