Straight from the horses mouth is news that we can expect to see Half-Life 2 go gold on Monday, the 30th of August, 2004!

Well just have to wait and see.

I'm preloading it over Steam right now.

I feel the time is near.

What's the definition of going Gold exactly? I always assumed that meant it's ready for productiion.

Saying that a game has "gone Gold" means that the current release candidate has been tested enough to ensure that it has a minimum amount of bugs and whatever glaring problems they were working on are fixed. This release candidate is now concidered the "Gold Master." It is then sent off to a manufacturing facility were it is mass produced as quickly as possible. It usually ends up on store shelves about 1-2 weeks after being certified gold.

            Hope this helps.

I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this game for a very long time. I even bought a 128mb card in preperation for the game a while back, that has since gone bad. Time to upgrade once again!

IIRC the name is due to the final version being burned onto a gold dye cd (gold master), which supposedly lasts longer.

I'm Preloading HL2 now off Steam, bout a third done. When it's released they let you activate it (the download is encrypted) if you pay. Not a bad system really

Not bad at all. I tried out Steam before but all that was available was Half-Life, Counter-Strike and all of its million off-shoots. Now with the Counter-Strike: Source beta out and Half-Life 2 on the way it make perfect sense.

No more discs, patches, no-cd cracks or any of that BS. I hope more companies get the clue and offer something similar to this cause it is extremely promising.

Yeah, you can also download all the other games you've activated (via entering your cd key), so if you lose, say, your original HL disc it's not a problem if you've got a reasonable connection.

The hl2 preload isn't currently the whole game, only ~500mb, I expect we'll be waiting several weeks/months still.
