    Re: Another Tsunami for Japan

Japan's meteorological agency says a tsunami of at least two metres (6.5 feet) high could hit Hokkaido and Honshu islands after 1210 GMT.
Dayum, the one that hit SEA in 2004 was between 1.3 and 2mtrs high...

They are now saying it was more like 8.1 on the scale. Everyone in my office is watching sky news hoping to see it live... Its 15 mins late already

hmmm, nothing so far... maybe it will be ok?

Having watched all sorts of Discovery channel programs on the 12/25 Tsunami, that was a mega-thrust quake, which is where a plate slips under another, forcing it upwards, displacing a huge volume of water along the hundreds of miles of fault line. The more common type of quake is for the plates to slide across each other, in which case it would seem that the potential for a Tsunami would be significantly less, so perhaps that is what we have here.

        ps- I said 'mega-thrust'

The BBC's Chris Hogg in Tokyo says in the past tsunamis have caused extensive damage in Japan but they were of a far greater magnitude than is being predicted.

            Re: Another Tsunami for Japan

A wave measuring about 40 centimenters (16 inches) did wash up on some eastern Pacific coastal areas of Japan, officials there said, but nothing like the wave of almost 2 meters (about 6 feet) that had been predicted as a possibility.

One of the London papers was making out that this would be a massive and devastating, so I guess it is good news that it there were only 'tiny waves'.
