I'd like to know who the one out of four actually are and what would they think if they were told Bush sr.'s outlook for iraq in the persian gulf war in the context of what has happened today...

no kidding. I have no axe to grind with the elder Bush at all. He didn't have the most fruitful presidency, but I voted for him anyway.
W could learn a lot from his dad about rational foreign policy by reading 1998's "A World Transformed":
Trying to eliminate Saddam, extending the ground war into an occupation of Iraq, would have violated our guideline about not changing objectives in midstream, engaging in "mission creep," and would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. Apprehending him was probably impossible. We had been unable to find Noriega in Panama, which we knew intimately. We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq. The coalition would instantly have collapsed, the Arabs deserting it in anger and other allies pulling out as well. Under the circumstances, there was no viable "exit strategy" we could see, violating another of our principles. Furthermore, we had been self-consciously trying to set a pattern for handling aggression in the post-Cold War world. Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the United Nations' mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression that we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land. It would have been a dramatically different ? and perhaps barren ? outcome.
I feel sorry for him - psychologically, it's one of the worst things to hear - guess he deserves it
i am shocked that 75% think it. I would have thought that 100% thought jr was worse

that is true. compartmentalize his shit, and there are a few thigns that are rokcing. its just that most people weigh the war far more heavily than domestic policiy at this point, and i dont blame them, early on, we were doing ok, but through sheer stupidity, we have become stuck in the proverbail quicksand.

I was just giving a reason why 100% of people might not think Bush 2 is worse than Bush 1.
I don't think there was any possible way to depose Saddam and have a good solution. So it's not that Bush's plans are stupid... it's that it was an impossible task to begin with. Probably better to have not started it in the first place.
Like I said before, maybe in another thread.... Saddam, with the illusion of WMDs, was an excellent deterrant to Iran. But with him gone, now there's nothing stopping Iran from taking over Iraq.... except the USA military. If Iraq can't defend themselves, and we leave.... we're all fucked.
he surrounded himself with some of the most half assed , half brained staff, he kept them around for years after 70% of this place called for a change, and he tried to run za PR war as opposed to a violent war, which was the correct option. now he is denying some vital facts about iraq. corruption within gov't, openly no less, the insurgency and those aiding it, remmeber bin laden? etc etc etc que toasty here.;

Apples and Oranges. Two different people, two different times. I do not buy that liberal bull shit. Go bark at a different tree.

For the economy, the current Bush admin. has been far better.
talk about the lesser of two evils. both of them were absolutely awful for the economy. for a right wing president to run that kind of deficit is pathetic. fiscal responsibility my ass...

Hmmm... the economy is bad right now?
Dow is at 12,300 (all-time high)
Taxes are lower, yet tax revenues are highest in history.
Deficit has been cut in half more than 2 years ahead of schedule.
4.3% unemployment (lower than any point during Clinton)
Rich are paying a larger percentage of the tax burder than at any time during Clinton.
I will concede your point that the Bush admin has been spending a lot, but if the economy is doing so poorly right now, then it's news to me.
housing market is going in the crapper...which is often a sign of a looming recession. your currency has gone down significantly against pretty much all other major currencies worldwide.
the fact that the dow is up and unemployment is low is blind luck. the guy can barely spell 'economy', let alone have some measure of control over it.
