    Ugh oh.

I have a 250 gig external hard drive (see pic). It was sitting on top of my desktop and one of my cats knocked it off. Now when I plug it back it, the pc cant recognize/locate it. I have all my music and pictures on there. Any suggestions of what to do? Can I take it some where and have them retrieve the data? What will they do with it if they do retreive it?

just go into a local comp store...yes you will more than likely be able to get it retrived. they'll throw it on another drive if you pay 'em for it.

if a comp store can't retrive it with a software retreval, then you're looking at spending at least a grand to have it recovered...i used these guys when mine failed: http://www.cbltech.ca/

threehils, seems like the problem is with the interface rather than the HD.
My choice would be extract the hard disc from the box and plug it into your pc, you should probably get access to your info. (considering there should be a normal ide/sata/scsi hd into the case, you should be able to access the data).

In any case, if you can recover the data, think about changing the HD because if got hit, there's a big chance you have problems with bad clusters or missing data in the future.

I was gonna suggest that. Your files aren't necessarily lost. Most probably the circuit board/USB interface got knocked loose.

I'd try the same...if BIOS can't even recognize it though, then you're in trouble...the shock may have jittered it enough to be pretty well shot...
