    Terrorist attack in London

I was first going to post this in the Politics section, but then came the news what substance had been used to poison Alexander Litvinenko, a former KGB colonel and up until today a critic of president Putin who was looking into the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, a research journalist (info here): Polonium-120, a radioactive waste product of uranium. (info here)

Litvinenko had lunch with a contact in a sushi bar four days ago. A few hours he was rushed to the hospital where doctors thought he had been poisoned with rat poison.

Today Litvinenko died and traces of Polonium-120 were found in his body. There was also radiation measured in the sushi bar where was poisoned.

Even though Litvinenko holds Putin responsible in a final statement (read here), Putin denies he has anything to do with it and blames a Russian business tycoon in exile in the UK. Bullshit. A poisoning with Polonium however, is far to complicated to be carried out by just anyone. The fact that the FSB (former KGB) is known for its sophisticated poisoning tactics and that Polonium is primarily used by the army as a detonator for nuclear weapons probably is just plain coincidence, right?

    (full story)

Those who have read my post about Anna Politkovskaya being gunned down (here) know my opinion on the matter. Going deeper into that would indeed be material for Politics. But this goes further than a political murder. By using a radioactive substance who knows how many British citizens have been exposed to radioactivity? And even worse: who knows how many have been contamineted with the Polonium? (FYI: Polonium-120 radiates alpha rays which will cause cancer quite rapidly)

The Kremlin didn't cross the line with this, he went 5 miles over it! Whacking a political adversary or a nosy journalist is a crime you can expect from a guy like Putin. But releasing a radioactive substance in a heavily populated civilian area in the EU... Well that's something Al Quaida would do. My opinion on who the real "bad guys" are in Chechnya was already changing, but with this attack Putin revealed him like he really is: a terrorist in a suit lacking any respect whatsoever for human rights or life itself!

^^^ they didn't know for sure until the autopsy. Plus the British government kept aside all the time until it became clear that it was a polonium poisening...

Yeah well, for Putin as well as for the entire EU. It wouldn't be the first time he shuts down the gas transport to Europe. And since Winter is knocking at the door, that's a very powerful weapon.

          Quote:

" Putin, speaking later Friday at news conference in Helsinki, Finland, called
          Litvinenko's death a tragedy.

But he said British medical documents did not show "that it was a result of violence,
this is not a violent death, so there is no ground for speculations of this kind." "

Yeah. Because people often naturally accumulate lethal doses of Polonium-210 after they visit sushi restaurants

          Please.

Nov. 24th, 2006: Alexander Litvinenko dies in a London hospital of apparent radioactive poisoning. The former KGB agent was a fierce critic of Putin and was also investigating the death of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

Oct. 7th, 2006: Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya is found shot to death near her Moscow apartment. She had been conducting extensive research into Russian political activities related to the Chechen wars. She was a prominent critic of the war and of Putin.

July 9th, 2004: American journalist Paul Klebnikov, head of the Russian division of Forbes, is shot dead late at night on a Moscow street. The journalist had also been involved in investigative research related to Russian governmental misappropriation of funds related to Chechen post-war reconstruction efforts. Before his murder, Klebnikov had been in close contact with Yan Sergunin, a former Chechen vice-premier in the pro-Moscow government back in 2001.

June 24th, 2004: Jan Sergunin, former Chechen vice-premier to Moscow, is shot dead in a Moscow street by unknown assailants on a motorcycle. Sergunin had also been involved in research on money laundering in Chechnya.

That's, of course, just a small sampling.

Hmmmm. Sinister forces are at work, me thinks

I saw on the news yesterday that Polonium-120 is one hundred, thousand million times more toxic than cyanide. Fortunately it is only harmful if eaten, drunk or injected so the other people in the restaurant should not have been at risk (nothing reported so far). I cant help but feel sorry for the restaurant owner, cant have done the business any good and he/she has nothing to do with it!

I just wonder if the Kremlin is really that stupid that they don't think everyone knows that they're bumping off critics, or if they just don't care.

They just don't care. But by using radioactive material they're bringing a lot of heat on them.

actually it really won't. too many of our heads-of-state and peripheral leaders are a bunch of pvssies to do anything in response.

^^ Unless you are exploiting some benefit from it, or if it is just too egregious and you're forced to deal with it, I would guess that politicians don't wanna deal too much with another nation's dirty laundry. Not only that, it's a common courtesy which is reciprocated by them not digging in our politicians' dirty laundry (read - IRAQ)
