So let me get this straight...

America is one of the richest and most developed countries in the world. Constantly lets the rest of the world know how advanced they are...

Yet I'm hearing in this thread about cities that don't recycle?! Not just one city but by the looks of it a good handful.

I'm no tree hugger or anything but that's fucking disgusting. I didn't know there were cities in the first world that did that anywhere. Australian households have been recycling for almost as long as I can remember.

Seriously what is going on here? Why is this the case? I'm no garbologist but this sounds like the most irresponsible thing I've heard all week.

You don't need time, just separate bins. In fact, it's easier to keep clean if you have separate bins.

Yeah, I find it fairly amazing that major cities in America don't have kerbside recycling. Despite the fact that our Prime minister won't sigh the Kyoto protocol Australia isn't too bad at recycling. There's still room for heaps of improvement though, so we shouldn't be too smug. We are really bad on the plastics and packaging.

i used to not until i figured out the city was still charging me for it. we have another can the size of a normal can only for recycling. they are supposed to have some sort of state of the art system that can weed through everything & sort accordingly. usually my recycle is fuller than my normal trash can.

I recycle everything and anything and have turned as many people as I can to it...just a damn waste and selfish not too.

All apply for me except the last two. I recycle almost everything. as a matter of fact, my recycle bin that the trash company picks up is generally more full than my trash can (which is only a 32 gallon can, one of the smallest). Furthermore, I have my trash picked up on a bi-weekly basis because I dont need to pay for the additionional service since I dont generate that much solid waste. The thing that pisses me off is that my trash company will only pick up news paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum/tin. So all my pizza boxes, other cardboard, batteries, white paper/junk mail have to be taken to the city recycling center, which is small hassle, but worth it to the environment. I havent read all the post in this thread, but there really isnt a good reason for anyone not to be recycling, especially if your city will take it for free. Just think about all the solid waste ignorant people fill their trash cans with which goes straight to the landfill in hopes that it will biodegrade and become oil some million years down the road. What a joke.

I don't know much (or anything actually) about American unions or what they get up to but woudn't the sanitation unions also handle the recycling contracts?
