re:pete king and the sportman awards...

lets hear what everyone says. our radio station ehre is doing it too.

the award goes to any person at any level from 8 yrs old to senior golf, any sport, its basically the good guy story award.

im going with in no particular order...

    1. Jason Mc elwain.- the autistic NY'er who dropped 6 three pointers in a row, scoring 20 in 5 minutes, in his first game ever.

    2. george mason.-- if you dont love the NCAA tourney, you dont like sports.

    3. (for jenks and jimbo)-- tony larussa-- for keeping his mouth shut during the world series and saving baseball a lot of trouble.

    4. agassi-- king walked out of NY on top of the world. had me crying in the stands.

    5. new orleans saints.-- if you watched thier homecoming, you know why.

    i forgot a few others.
    1. federer- won 95% of tennis matches played, 3 of 4 majors
    2. italy's goalkeeper. one goal allowed all tourney, with one other goal being scored on him by his own team's mistake.
    3. weaver/rogers combo -- two guys who were written off many times, pitching in the world series like thier lives were on the line.

if i had to pick one, its the mcelwain kid. that story brought tears to my eyes, inspired thousands and thousands of people, and IMHO, is the greatest sports story ever told. thiank about it, this kid, has alzheimers, and wanted a HS degree, so he went and volunteered as the team amanager, sat on that bench for 4 years, and in his final game, the coach told his to dress in uniform, sat the entire game, went in with 4 minutes left, and scored 6 3's in a row and a 2, 20 points, 4 minutes, handicapped. and rode the shoulders of his peers out of the court. if you watch the video, watch the crowd, and in particular, the booster section of yellow. that was nothing short of a miracle.

i also forgot to ass in diego corrallles, for his fight against jose castillo. GREATEST BOXING MATCH EVER>

            ^^^ All luck, IMO.

does anyone know how long it has been since a&m has done anything in basketball? about 18 years ago when we were quasi-decent and even then it was nothing special. that school was begging for a coach like billy gillespie. i really hope he thinks about staying for a while. nr is a born and raised texan, so he's probably used to living the farm life..... maybe. he kinda left utep abruptly after he coached them to glory. i remember going to basketball games at a&m when i was in school and there'd be maybe 200 people in stands. they weren't a fun team to watch. now the stadium gets packed. i think nearly 15,000 come to every home game and they are loud as hell. that is insane! i fucking wish i was going to school when they were this good. and we went from not winning one conference game to billy gilespie taking over then two years later losing in a buzzer beater to lsu, a final four team in the second round of the ncaa tourney... they play solid basketball. joseoh jones and acie law are the best in-out duo in the country. i love college hoops man.

btw, i really enjoyed seeing texas a&m manhandle university of texas in football... good stuff. actually a very surprising enjoyable defensive football game.

Does it tarnish the story at all knowing the other team knew about it and pretty much let him score those points? Sure, he had to drop the ball in the bucket, but they were all pretty much uncontested. The great story is everyone coming together to make it happen. Turns out there are good people in this world.

not at all. its nothing to do with skill or some immaculate reception, but more about the good in people, and how that whole community ralied around him in those final minutes of that game. like i said, watch the booster section and the cheerleaders.

even if he was allowed the shots, he rifled off 20 points in 4 minutes. most of them three's.

it really was my story of the year.
