I find it fascinating that not a single mobile phone signal could be gained at all.

The phones are designed so that when you call the emergency number, it will use whatever provider's signal it can pick up to get the call through. Even works without a sim.

Even in some of the most remote locations in Australia you will be able to at least get someone's signal to get an emergecy call out.

that southern oregon area is pretty high elevation... always impossible to get a cell signal in those areas.... i never get them up on the mountains

very sad. my heart goes out to the family. He honestly should of not left the car. They always tell you not to leave the car. They could of lived for 14 days, kids were getting breast milk. They had snow as water. Ugh. sad.

I have been following this story since I heard about it last weekend at the beginning of Diggnation as they were friends with him.

Very sad indeed....he walked over 10miles trying to save his family...I think that was a very heroic thing to do, but ended up in tragedy.

He really did everything to save his family. This was a true man. I would have not done anything different. May his family stay strong and his chlidren know that their Father was a hero. They were the only reason he was able to live so long. RIP. May God watch over you and your family.

snow doesnt work as a source for water unless you have a source of heat to melt it. Snow/ice by itself actually drains more energy from you than the benefits from having water, or at least so i was told on a survival training course i took...

i didnt read the articles, but wasn't his family found the same day he decided to go walking? i know they had been sitting there a number of days already but damn if he had just waited a little while longer. still he had to find help and this story had the most tragic yet heroic of endings.
