Athlon 64 3200+ & ASUS Motherboard

Ok so maybe I should have consulted with some of you guys first about this... Last night I purchased a:

Asus K8V K8T800 DDR-400/SATA/USB/GB-LAN/8X-AGP/ATX

&

Athlon 64 3200+

I know the 3400, the FX64, etc is better but this is all I could really afford for now.

Anyone know someone that has this processor/motherboard... are they happy with it?

You did good. AMD 64 is where its at right now IMO. Like Jenks said, the Mobile processor would have been better, because its unlocked and can be overclocked like a mug. But if you weren't going to overclock any way, you wouldn't know the difference.

I also would have gone with the nForce3 chipset, but VIA chipsets are pure quality, so it won't break on you or anything.

Right now I am running a Mobile athlon 2500+ which I bought to replace my desktop 2500+ some months back. The Desktop chip just kept running hotter and hotter and I wanted to overclock it more and more, plus the FSB on the thing would not go over 175 Mhz, so I got the Mobile and could not be happier. It runs right now at 2.5 Ghz, stock on the 2500+ is 1.8 Ghz. So its a 700 Mhz increase. Also, I'm running the FSB at 210 Mhz, or 420 DDR. It definetely made a difference over 175 or 350 DDR.

Thats what it means as of right now. All the 64-bit chips come from the factory locked, which means when you turn up the multiplier in BIOS, it doesn't do anything. But you CAN turn up the FSB from its default speed of 200 Mhz. So I think the 3200+ is defaulted at 2.2 Ghz, right?? So that means it will be 200 x 11 default, but if you bought good memory, then you can change this. You already have a great motherboard, so if you haven't bought memory yet, I recommend you get some good stuff. Like Crucial XMS, Geil performace series, or OCZ. The OCZ has been recommended on many tech sites in conjunction with the Athlon64.

I would get at least PC4000 and maybe even PC4200 ram. Which would run at higher clock frequencies. Then you can change that FSB from 200, to even as high as 260. I know many people running around 250 and 260 Mhz FSB right now, which translates to 500 and 520 DDR. That would be a significant performance increase. Then you can set the multiplier so it doesn't clock the processor, overall, any higher then 2.2 Ghz. As an example 250 x 9 = 2.250 GHZ, which would still be clocked at 2.2 or 260 x 8.5 multipler = 2.210 GHZ.

Somewhere down the line, mobo manufacturers may figure out a way to unlock the chips. And they may also figure out a manual way to unlock them, by joining some of the bridge gaps on the processor itself. But as of now, there is nothing to do but bump up the FSB as much as possible.

HI chap - Well I purchased the Athlon 3200+ 64 bit processor with a Asus K8V-SE Deluxe board - 1 gb crucial 3200mb ddr - 2 x western digital 160gb sata's - 1 x ibm 180mb ide 7200 - Llan Li removable storgae bay with extra Quantum 120gb hard drive - Plextor 8xDVD-RW - Winfast 128 mb geforce 4 graphics. To house this I bought a Wavemaster aluminium case with bay flap and a akasa 460 watt PSU.

My personal feeling is that this system is the best I have ever had, runs very very quick with windows xp pro serviced packed up to 2.0.

My P3 system used to process an average wave file of say 8 mins in about 45 seconds, and the new beast I have under the table here now will do the same in around 5 seconds!!

Very nice board for the money excelent processor can I say more....... Probably!!!!

i got mine from www.retailaccess.com but its that same board and cpu, its a bundle deal that amd offers to those who owrk in retail . I certainly like it and its working well. No problems with mine, just make sure if you are going to use the sata or that via ata or raid that you have the right drivers on a disk when loading windows

A usefull tip! If you have a Laptop just copy the required raid file to a Floppy and place in drive before loading windows press I think f6 for raid drivers etc etc etc. Not really into games but does run the few I have very well. Only really have Pro Evolution Soccer 3 and Colin Mcrae 4.
