A lot of which have some very innovative design principles. A lot which take some interesting tacks for simplicity's sake.
Gnome's Human Interface Design (HID) guidelines makes for very interesting subject matter. They try and come up with a best practices framework which they recommend all applications follow on their platform to make the end user experience both easy and practical.

Precisely. The amount of window managers on the *nix platform alone will be well and truly above 50.

Not at all. You can specify how much ram you want it to take, video settings...basically everything. My laptop is only 1 gig of ram and I am running Vista Enterprise along with Win 3.1.Mutations presents Change The Music
