Corrupt HD data recovery - help please!

so i decided i'd start backing up my irreplacable files recently and bought myself a new 160GB HD and a DVD writer..... with the intention of using my old 20GB HD and DVDs as backup for all my photos...

plug in the new drives and all of a sudden my fucking old HD says its corrupt  slows the computer waaaaaaay down if its plugged in, can't click on it, it won't recognise it as a volume. have tried taking it into work and plugging into the PC there and still no joy. IT here can't do anything with it but then they are a bit useless. searched one place that would give an estimate based on the last three drives they fixed the same as mine and that came back as about ?260!!!!!

can anyone offer any advice on software solutions or something? realistically i can't afford to pay that kind of money so i'm going to have to try and do it myself on the cheap

    did you:-

try plugging it back in without the new drive plugged in?

try plugging it in as a slave on another PC?

try plugging into a linux machine as a slave, chances are that linux will pick it up and you will be able to recover your data. This has worked for me before.

So has sticking the drive in the freezer for an hour then plugging it back in, remember to put the drive in a jiffy bag first though

I won't be back until next Tuesday, so if Get Carter is the correct answer, I would appreciate of someone else posts a new cap for me

Use Gibson Research's SpinRite, which I think is upto version 6.0....

Great program, boots directly from the CD... most complete disc recovery anywhere possible.

I think it's at www.grc.com, or do a google search.

                  Later peeps

ok heres a question for all you computer geniuses....

i've run this getdataback program and seem to have recovered everything only.... i've also recovered a lot of stuff i deleted ages ago now i know that on a PC nothing is really deleted until its written over again, but this was a 20GB hard drive with basically no free space on it at all and i've recovered 80GB worth of data off it WTF????

no worries dude, sorry I missed it..... no idea about the extra stuff, its possible that since data was being overwritten, it wasnt really overwritten..... so you might have had recovered double info from the same sectors...

not sure if thats possible but in my mind, that seems like one of the most plausible reasons
