I was thumbing through Mixmag at the book stand and came across an article talking about this service by Shazam where if youre in a club or something and want to know the name of a track or song you call this number (2580 in the UK only, I think) and it will take a 20 sec sample and text you back the track. They said you would be suprised at the results. I have my doubts, especially with the genre most of us on here listen too
Anyone tried this yet? I Think there is a small fee of course.

How does it work?
A bit of mystery always seems to make things even more appealing...
But for the technology fans, here's a the science bit:
Back in 2001 our Chief Scientific Officer, Avery Wang, created an algorithm which is capable of recognising patterns in music that are unique to every song. So, when you call Shazam, we map the 20-second clip that you play to your phone to over 3.5 million songs in our database to find an exact match using the algorithm.
Simple.
