    Re: Apocalypto

It is a good action movie, the problem is the way he depicts tha Mayan culture, as savage and blood thirsty and of course the "apocalyptic" implications that he and his "cristianite" friends seem to be so much into right now, fowl

I think the savages in this movie were the Aztecs at least that's what I thought as I know they were the savages. Mayan culture was not that way. I was a bit confused myself. I believe the Mayans were the ones being captured but maybe he just doesnt know the complete history lol ?

I know in Mayan culture they did have sacrifices too (back then who didnt) but the difference was the people actually volunteered.

I think the movie was great. But unfortunately very inaccurate. It's a movie, so the story and action was good. If it was done by documentary type of people I think that would have been better but less of an "action" style and more drama....

I mean the Mayans were great astronomers and I believe were the first to build an "observatory".... and yet they were surprised by the eclipse.

I still give the movie a solid 8 out of 10.

          Re: Apocalypto

Historically Incorrect, they were not surprised by the eclipse, they knew they were coming, and they both were an exceptionally warmonging people, and also performed sacrifice, theres a lot controversy about this even among scholars, so it is just not correct, probably the only mesoamerican culture who were a little less bloody were the toltecs, and they were gone long time before the "time" they tried to depict here

                  thanks for read...

but i think this lady read way into this movie...i am def not a historian in hte mayan culture...but i did not come out of the movie thinking these people where savages...i know a lot of people who have, and have thought the same thing....the movie only took place approx a 3 day period...you could expect anyone to do a biography on the mayan culture in 3 days....from my understanding mel gibson wasn't trying to do an documentry on mayan's (could be wrong)

I thinks it's a good movie,if at least tricks you into looking a little bit further, then it was at least worth, but most of the people will go thinking, well this savages where scared the hell of a lot by the eclipse, and obviously its wasn't a good day but, it wasn't that way at all. It does have some good research done, they do speak maya on the movie and thats very respectable and constructive, but still I want to see the facts, I mean this is an ancient civilization of wich we don't know much, why make it more obscure than it is already.

                          very innacurate.

I think MG (not martin garcia) could have done a way more better film, not just going with the classic violence cliche.

he could have told the story in a much better way than just cutting heads.

it shows he is a boozzer!!

                            Re: Apocalypto

not a bad film overall, although I'll tell you a couple of things.Mel Gibson is going tomake a fucking killing on this...picking ronaldino to be his star actor for the fil and all other equally impressive cast such as the old bat from the local cornershop...lol.
No but seriously though...the acting is on most parts quite good but he couldn't have paid them much...the special effects of any kind are at a minimum...I think the set probably along with stunt cordination is where most of themoney went.

Another thing...I can see a definate patern in MG's films...a lot of blood and gore.thats fine by me and I even support it. at leat this was better than the Passion, thats for sure.

Anyways worth a watch if its for free, otherwise wouldn't pay to see in a cinema there are older and better films on the subject.

                                Re: Apocalypto

                                I just saw this movie.
                                Overall liked it very much.

                                I agree with this line:
"The thrill of hearing melodic Yucatec Maya spoken by familiar faces (although the five lead actors are not Yucatec Maya but other talented Native American actors) during the first ten minutes of the movie is swiftly and brutally replaced with stomach churning panic at the graphic Maya-on-Maya violence depicted in a village raid scene of nearly 15 minutes."

the raid on the village was really hard to watch,-stomch churning panic is a very good description. The film created an incredibly tense atmosphere (which is good) from that point on.

You begin to think that Mel Gibson gets his kicks from filming graphic violence in detail eg - the fight scenes in Braveheart, the whipping of Christ and these fight and human dissection scenes.

I read the wiki article after seeing the film - so I can see some of the points made above in relation to history.

Defo worth watching - but probably not best to be eating rare steak while watching it !

                                9/10 for sure.
