      Re: Beckham

Beckham is the most overrated player in the last 15 years. All he?s good for is set pieces.

But he?s obviously not going to the US because of his soccer career.

True for the male half of the population anyways...the women...they might have some sudden unexplaned interest.

            Interesting.

Baseball, america's pasttime, is a slower sport than soccer, requires more attention to grasp everything that's going on when nothing is in movement, and ballparks from big leagues to little leagues are packed to the rim with fans glued to the "nonaction" all spring/summer/fall. Im not taking it personal, i'm just not following your theory here how Americans can't concentrate enough to follow soccer, and that we watch sports differently- like there have to be explosions going off every 5 minutes for us to be interested.

Answer my question first chief- you're the one making sweeping generalizations about how American's watch sports.

                      Re: Beckham

                      ok ok

soccer isnt popular here for one reason, and the reason is that the game could be played at a pace where it would be attractive, maybe a pace similar to basketball and hockey. its too slow for the type of game it is. i mean a soccer net is 30 feet wide and yet, a game where 4 goals are scored is considered a high scoring game. for a game that says it is physical, it deters contact too much, and when there is contact, there is flopping, whining and crying.

americans love the slow game of baseball for what it brings to the table beyond the small action of running the bases. its so much of a mental game, especially when you see a guy like derek jeter, manny ramirez, david eckstein, or ichiro play. they know when it is time to attempt to hit the ball the opposite way, to drive a runner over, when a runner knows when to jump the pitch and get a running start, stealing a base, putting together the stringof hits to score a run. and then you can look at pitching to a great hitter, whether a homer hitter or a feild hitter. for instance. when the tigers p,layed the cards, the real baseball fan knows that when eckstein was on first with one out, and albert was hitting, the pitcher and feilders know that albert would get an inside pitch to try to prevent a power fly ball, but rather, try to concede an infeild groud ball, or a blooper, to prevent eckstein from reaching scoring position.

if you are gonna bring in the "arenas"(still wondering why), only 2 sports regularly play inside, basketball and hockey, and for good reason. winter sports, requiring a feild of play void of elements. baseball and football teams that play in a dome, do it because of weather temps. you will only see the domes in the north and far south because of summer heat in florida and arizona, and winter cold in greebay,

the arenas in hockey and basketball give you a "show", meaning some cheerleaders and a period break entertainment. also, you might see something on the jumbotron, but only in downtime.

lastly, if you think that americans dont follow soccer, tell; that to the few hundered thousand people that packed little italy here in NYC after the world cup. we have fans that enjoy the game, but comon, baseball and football will never be touched as to what they are.

and to all the people that say baseball is only american..... there are leagues for baseball in every world wide region outside of mainalnd europe and africa. asia has multiple leaguies and national teams, central and south america have baseball leagues that produce some of the most talented players we have. albert puljos, arod, mariano rivera, ichirio, ching ming wang, daivid ortiz, johan santana, all top level players from regions far from the states.

                        Re: Beckham

I think it also has to do with this:

I see videos and pictures of children in south america and europe all gaterhing around kicking a soccer ball around. In America, kids in the city grab a basketball. Where i grew up, it was little league baseball. I can remember playing pitch and catch as long as any memory i have. Soaking a ball glove in oil, putting a baseball in it, and wrapping it with a rubber band, or sleeping with the glove under the mattress so it would wear and close quicker, etc. Also, i grew up in the country, most of the kids of my age picked up a baseball, bat and glove, or a football and went to the field. Seeing a trend here?

What i am seeing more of, which i stated earlier, is a lot of soccer ball stickers on minivans. A lot of soccer fields popping up in the parks next to baseball diamonds. I'd venture a guess tho that there are and will always be proportionately more baseball fields than soccer tho. It's just been bred into our history for so long.

The generation of kids that are getting into soccer now and in the past decade are not old enough yet to have kids to teach them the sport THEY love and grew up with, which may be soccer.

Time old traditions i guess. I still don't see soccer taking over baseball, football, or basketball here in America, but it will be interesting to watch these kids i see running around playing little league soccer today grow up and see what sports they teach their kids.

But i do know it has NOTHING to do with Americans being ADD and needing a "show" to pay attention to.

                          Re: Beckham

i played soccer until highschool, when i had to play football, hockey, track and baseball for my school, they were all better. they are all geared to where the team as a whole needs to play cohesively to win, in soccer, you dont, as long as you have a decent backfeild defense and one star up front, you can win. and the game of soccer, is just too slow for a game without breaks like in football and baseball. just watch the games of basketball and soccer. same principle of moving hte ball down feild, and putting it somewhere. yet, a basketball net is only 18 inches, and there are sometimes 50-70 baskets made, but a soccer.....4-5?

the real "soccer" game to follow is the brazilian verison that is played indoors, on a smaller feild, they use the walls, score more, and frankly, offer a suberb experience for soccer. i forget the name of it, but it was far more entertaining.

hey einstein, if you read it, it would actually be called "contrasting". the only comparables within the games are

we call em players, they are played on feilds, and fans watch.
