For my early productions I used Cubase exclusively. Now I'm using Logic and having to relearn it from scratch because the two programs are literally ass-backwards as far as quick commands and with many functions.

you have to pick up Celemony Melodyne
you wouldnt believe the things you can do with audio

reason is cool and good for learning but the sound quality is shit and you are very limited...imo
i prefer Cubase but all that really matters is what you're comfortable with
Pro Tools, Cubase, Abelton, and Logic are the majors in DAW land

reason is a good tool to learn with, but not something to be considered as great. i use and love logic, but most major DAWs (logic, pro tools, cubase, live, acid) will get you the results you want... its what your comfortable with. i would suggest starting with reason and moving to live. best thing with live is that you can throw DJ sets together and still use it to produce anything you want. and it works great with audio. i personally prefer not to use it, but its a great program. reason will help you with the basics, learning how synths work, automation and arrangement. once you get a firm grasp on it move to live or the above mentioned DAWs and you can always keep reason as a rewire instrument.
                good luck dude!

Depends on how serious you are about producing and how much money you want to spend on it ...

After half a year of doubting and waiting, I decided to go for Logic Pro 7 (after having "tried" cubase SX 3 for some months), and to be honest, I'm very happy with it. Basically, there isn't much difference between cubase and logic when it comes to composing and sequencing, but when you start using the included plugins, logic pro 7 is the winner for sure.

I've never used Ableton or ProTools.

                  Grtz,
