    Treatment of DJ's...

Why is that that we treat DJ's like they are better then us? Why do they suddenly become someone to put on a pedastool and worship because they can spin a record and mix a set?

When does it become ok for the rules to bend because someone is a DJ? They are doing a job no? So why is that that in a club where it says no smoking or no drinking beyond this point, it is ok because you are a DJ? That would be like saying no smoking in the OR and then letting the Dr do it because he's a Dr. so rules don't apply.

But with that said, how come it only really applies if you are a big name DJ and not some Joe Schmoe no one has ever heard of?

    Thoughts?

    Re: Treatment of DJ's...

like any other entertainer, we associate many djs with larger than life personas. its natural human tendency to put performers on pedestals...no different than a rock or movie star. i would even say most djs tend to be understated relative to their more mainstream counterparts, though there are some primadonnas to be sure.

as far as the drinking & smoking...depends where you go. some places let the dj get away with it, others don't. to me, its a bit of a grey area, as i don't necessarily agree with stuff like that but at the same time the guy is doing it night in and night out. a bit of slack isn't totally out of the question.

^^^ yeah true. I still don't get how in society we treat celebrities the way we do. We should be treating people like doctors, nurses, and teachers the way we treat someone who can bounce a ball, sing a note, or play a guitar.

Same reason why people treat The Rolling Stones, Tom Cruise, and Lance Armstrong like they are better than the rest of us. People enjoy the stuff they do and pay to see them do it. As a result, they're rich and powerful and famous. And when you're rich and powerful and famous, you get to do whatever the hell you want and everyone else can shove it Moral if the story: if you have a choice, be rich and powerful and famous.

Watching doctors, nurses, and teachers do their jobs is like watching paint dry. Watching people like Slitney Spears do their job is FUN!!! Fun people are cooler than non-fun people.

When was the last time a doctor saved your life? When was the last time a teacher taught you something profound, or at least, you looked back a teacher and thought "you rock"? It's a lot easier to find enjoyment and therefore idolize people such as deejays. After all, I'm sure almost everyone on MS appreciates what a particular DJ can achieve or how they perform. This doesn't justify this "idolization", in fact, I agree with the above comments and totally hate it and don't believe I do it, or at least not the extent most would. But as far as smoking etc, if I'm at a club and a DJ is totally rocking it, I don't give a shit if he/she is smoking and I'm not, I'll give them my packet if it means they'll keep performing. It's all about the music.

Because a good DJ gives us happy times.

Conversely, if the DJ is shit, it's

              It's very straight forward

It's interesting, but in my limited experience some of the best Djs are also the most down to earth.

Second that. I ran into Roger Sanchez in Ibiza a few years back and asked him is he wasn't that homo who spinned at Pasha. We ended up knocking back a few beers. Cool guy.

Yeah good point. It makes sense that because we get immediate gratification from these individuals they become the ones we "idolize"

As for the other side to my story....say you are at a club and the DJ isn't announced and you have no clue if it is Sasha, Armin or Joe Schmoe from down the street...the set is a mere "meh" for the night and you assume it's a nobody up there spinning. Does your opinion suddenly change once you find out they are a somebody, like say Sasha or Diggers?

No way !! If an International plays a "meh" set their name doesn't make it better. Case in point , Hybrid here a couple of weeks ago, alright set, but our very own Sean Quinn totally blew them out of the water. A shame he was on too early for most to hear!!
