In a 2005 study, British researchers put 18 undergraduates on stationary bicycles to pedal either to silence or to "popular electronic dance music" on headphones. Participants worked about 13 percent harder to the up-tempo music compared to silence. One of the researchers, Sam Carr, suggested in an e-mail interview that music competes with an exercisers' awareness of how hard they are breathing, or how much their legs ache.

Re: Do TVs, iPods help or hurt your workout?
I always have a nice set in when I go running, but the only problem is I have to find one with the right BPM or my brain vs body(especially breathing) have a hard time syncing up correctly. Plus if the BPM is too high I wear myself out too fast and don't get the workout I was looking for. and if it is too slow It's next to impossible to stay focused on the run." absolutely helps. When it comes to cardio machines, having a TV on is the only thing that keeps me on there. I can spend an hour on a treadmill if there's a Cards game or something on. Without it, I'm bored silly after just a couple minutes.Comment

i seriously wonder how these guys get grants to do this research...
how much common sense does it take to figure out high energy music is going to help you work out harder!?Comment

Re: Do TVs, iPods help or hurt your workout?
Yeah, I used to just spin some sets at a bpm I was comfortable with and let it ride but sometimes I like to listen to a set that I haven't heard before, it occupies the mind instead focusing on you bodies pains and such. I find danny howells sets, digweed sets, luke fair sets, to be some of the ones i ran best to. you're right Cattaneo is the shite to run to also, almost forgot about him." I've always thought about having a place in a bad ass fitness center where It's kinda like the spinning classes but 100%less gay.ituld be in the cardio room and there would be a dj booth and people would show up at a certain and the dj would begin the set and progress itacross like 2 hrs or so, and the intensity of the workout would be proportional to the set. Not only would it be aurally stimulating there could be like huge plasma screens and someon would put together CGI sets to go along with the music kinda like a Sander DVJ set would be. I don't know it might be cool." Focus on the subtleties and the world becomes grander"

^^I like your idea...Dancing burns loads of calories as is....if you are atually dancing...not just bobbing your head in the corner. My wife and I go Salsa dancing on Sunday nights and i'm pretty beat by the end of it.It's never too late to become the person you always thought you would be.Comment
