Plextor Set to Exit CD and DVD Drive Consumer Market

    LINK

Lame...IMO they've always made the best drives.

My 716SA will always be the best burner ever made no matter what comes after it.

Tough market though. Competitive. Margin's must suck.

I still have my old Plexwriter 8/20, and it's still working (8 years old now)

They also have the best services. One of my friend got a problem once, he called them, was only asked the serial number and got someone from DHL the next day to pick it up. Two or three days later he got a brand new one delivered also by DHL.

Once the market hit DVD writers that obtained speeds in excess of 4X, they started to put out some real shit that used bands that were known for giving out. You start cutting costs and using inferior parts, you're gonna get eaten up. Unless, you're Sony.

People don't want to spend $140-150 on a dvd burner. I have a 20X liteon that cost me $40 and it works just as good. I have owned plextor in the past (scsi) and they work good too but it isn't worth the extra amount.

indeed...when everything roughly cost the same it was Plextor & Lite-On that ruled supreme (esp. for ripping and code crackings )

Now that Lite-On and others are going cheap (and not lasting as long if you're one of those die-hard burning types, but otherwise Joe Consumer can get one to work just fine), no one wants to spend the bucks anymore.

My 24X CD-RW just keeps on chugging along...

The typical consumer won't find burners for that high of a price. Where the hell did you get those prices from?

Your right, prices have gone down a little since I have looked up a plextor. Now they are going for $90 and up then

^^ Whoa. Those are a rip. I didn't even know those prices are charged these days. I'm used to seeing those at less than half those prices. Ouch.
