Oil is the reason we are still in Iraq.

If there was no oil we could leave the Shias and the Sunnis to all out civil war. The Saudis would back the Sunnis and Iran the Shias. In some ways it would take the heat off us, instead of Muslim V West it would be muslim on muslim.

Sadly it's not going to happen, the whole region would collaspe, no oil exports and Israel would be stuck in the middle. I'd guess if it came to it Israel would have to launch some nukes.

War in Iraq is bad but what is the alternantive?

It is however good to see Bush starting to ge the USA on the right track in reducing oil imports. I would have been much happier to see some major tax breaks and a huge focus on alternavtive power sources.

It still amazes me how the neo cons trained a shaved monkey to talk.

Equally impressive is that the ultra libs still willingly use an ass as both their party symbol and their spokesperson/people. They sure are suckers for irony.

Look how quickly the internet and the cell phone infrastructure was built without government involvement.

It's not so much about our best interests.... as it is preserving our way of life. Or you could call it preserving the status quo.

We need oil to continue our day-2-day lives. We are dependent upon it in nearly every action we do every day.

Nuclear power is great for running a power plant. But that's only one area of concern.
Nuclear power won't run your car. Hydrogen cars are still a pipe dream. Only a few prototypes have been built, and they can hardly drive 100 miles on a tank of liquid hydrogen. And let's not forget that liquid hydrogen is extremely dangerous. If exposed to oxygen, it explodes instantly. (Remember the Space Shuttle Challenger?)

Can you honestly imagine a bunch of redneck hicks driving around in pickups run on liquid hydrogen? Scary thought.... to say the least. One bad fender-bender, and boom.

In the USA, car accidents are the leading killer of people under the age of 40. And that's just with cars run on gasoline. What would these numbers be if the cars were carrying liquid hydrogen? Scary thought, isn't it?

You can't even fuel a hydrogen car unless you have a completely robotic filling station. It's just too dangerous otherwise.

Yes.... when you get down to it.... it is all about oil.

Iran wants to take over Iraq, because if they did.... they would control the largest oil supply on earth. Once under their control, they could set prices aywhere they want.... and sell to anyone they want. China will pay damned near anything to get more oil. The only thing that has been keeping China from making ever more progress is that they can't get enough oil to supply their industrialization.

So Iran would control all this oil.... and they could deny the USA access to it.... and sell it to China. The US economy would take a huge hit, as gas prices skyrocket. Iran would get a huge boost in their powers dealing with the rest of the world. It would all but guarantee they get their nuclear weapon, which would mean the destruction of Israel.

But, of course, Israel won't allow Iran to go nuclear.... even if the rest of the world just stands by and does nothing. So before Iran actually finishes their nuke, Israel would attack them using conventional airstrikes on their weapons production sites. This will stir up a shitstorm of anti-Israel sentiment across the entire Middle East, and the USA will get dragged into it because we must help defend Israel.

So.... yes..... it's about oil. But oil leads to a lot of other stuff which we would like to prevent.

It would be simple to build a nuclear powered train system across this country. Would probably take 20 years but thats a solution.

the government will prevent this from happening. Not only because of extreme environmental lobby groups (that have already prevented us from being soverign in the oil business...not to mention building up other nuclear power plants), but you also have strong auto lobbyists too.

Imagine how pissed off the Japanese would be if we had a high-speed mag-lev rail system webbing this country? Probably wouldn't be too happy. Neither would Detroit and American automakers.

While lobbying can't technically force the government to do anything, it is those empowered in the government who bow down to these interests.

The truth of the matter is, it is our own government fvcking us over. time, and time again.
