            19.01.2007 Q&A with Jay Tripwire

Jay Tripwire hardly needs an introduction. Any self respecting house lover has at least half a dozen of his releases on quality labels like Nightshift, Nordic Trax and Lost My Dog, to name but a few. While the more boompty and jacking variants of house seem to dominate the charts, Jay keeps pushing the envelope of the deeper end of the spectrum. With a full-length album coming out in April and a few essential mixes floating around on the internet, it was a pleasure to get in touch with one of our favorite Canadians.

Your discography is impressive, to say the least. You must be one of the most prolific and hard-working producers out there. Where do you draw your inspiration from for your productions these days?
I draw a lot of inspiration from the music I play, from music long since passed to the newest shit. I just write what I’m feeling at that time. Where I live helps what I’m writing, the weather and the fact I live a few blocks from Mr Spock is also inspiring.
You're one of the foremost purveyors of quality and true deep house music. Releases like 'The Gastown Shuffle' are a prime example of just how good deephouse can sound and make you feel. A few years ago, your records were decidedly more 'techy' than your releases today. What has sparked your refound love for the deeper shades of this music we all love so much?
I always played deep stuff at the ends of my sets and that’s the part I always enjoyed about a night was when I could go deep and the heads there would feel that, the gratification was there, but the deep stuff hasnt been as quality and plentiful as it is now.there used to be good techy stuff, quality stuff, now its all gone down that minimal and electro route, I do find some awesome Detroit stuff from time to time, a set of just 1 sound is not the way to roll.
In a discussion about the suggested demise of vinyl as a medium I once heard you say that you never mix from cd to cd. Are you still a vinyl purist? What's your take on the vinyl vs. digital debate, and its impact on the industry?
Its next to impossible to get records now, I kept going thru gig after gig with broken decks, and my records went missing quite a few times last year, it just kinda happened I’m playing alot of cds...but to counteract the lameness of it I spend a lot of time doing re edits, premastering the cds to sound more like wax (even adding vinyl cracks and pops sometimes), face-lifting classics etc to make what I am gonna play different from the versions you might hear someone play, if I iam going to play more cds than wax, I better do something special to the tracks.
What was the year 2006 like for Jay Tripwire? Any specific highs or lows?
2006 was musically my best year. I worked on this album for nordic trax, and did some music i never thought i would be able to do. 2006 showed me that right now good house is a underdog and we gotta fight to show people whats up. i also saw house on a upswing, people growing tired of shit minimal and wanting that substance and groove.
With over 200 releases under your belt, the number of tracks out on Northern Lights, your own label, seems relatively low. Any plans to re-ignite this or other labels, or set up a new one?
Well I did a Northern Lights and Spaced Out, but i got hit hard by pressing plants and distros closing. I dont know if ill ever run any labels ever again, it’s a lot of work and stress I don’t need right now, just gonna focus on the music.
Are there any producers out there whose music really blew your mind in the past year?

Man were there, Kerri Chandler has shown the world he is still the man, Franck Roger and Mr V and Alix Alvarez have been good, my boy Matt Bandy is making some fantastic stuff, Ron Trents future vision label has been showing us the way, Gavin Froome has been on point in 07; I think Kelvin K is gonna blow some minds, my boy Luke from Nordic Tracks has slowly but surely done some fat shit, and hopefully the dope shit Gavin made in 06 will come out in 07 hahaha.

Tricks you got up your sleeve for 2007?
Well I got the album out in April, a full length album on Nordic Tracks, I’m pretty happy with the project and some of the tracks are a personal best for me, and the album tour!! hopefully i can stop by Holland on the tour…
