    Vista -- Who's getting it?

Planning on picking up a new PC. Truth is, it is for a dedicated Mame/Daphne/etc box and doesn't really need a lot of juice, so I could just go out and buy an el cheapo box for that purpose and be done with it. With this shiny new OS coming out, though, part of me is thinking I maybe ought to get a more high end one with Vista preloaded when they come out in a few days and use my current computer for Mame.

Anyone know enough about Vista to know if it's worth paying more for? Really, I just use for PC for tunes, surfing the net, photos, and some word processing, and my current computer is a 2.8GHz P4 with a gig of SDRAM, so it's plenty of machine for what I'm doing and would frankly be overkill for a Mame box. If Vista is going to be the standard in the near future, though, I'd just as soon get on board now rather than buying a cheap computer now and another in a few months.

Also, anyone know how much of a difference there is between the different versions of Vista?

    Thoughts?

Yeah, and what if said bug cripples Windows Update and you can't connect.

        I'm waiting a while...6 months to a year.

I've been running Vista Enterprise for almost 2 months now and haven't really had to much trouble with it other than PcAnywhere and VPN support. I would say go for it and you can always read up on Vista at the MS site http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/.

Not really, but every time something goes wrong with my computer or one at work I always say "Blame Bill!!!" or "Thanks Bill!!!"

Re: Vista -- Who's getting it?

Your 2.8GHz P4 with a gig of SDRAM isn't going to cut it for Vista. You need at least 2 gig of RAM (I'd personally go with 4 Gig). I suggest you download the Vista compatibility tool from the Microsoft website to see if you have any problems with your hardware. Vista is very VERY picky about compatibility. You might find you have to upgrade a lot of hardware in order to install it.

personally i would upgrade when i get myself a new pc ... which is probably when the new quad core comes out later in the year ... if you're still using the old systems i dont think it would be wise to get vista

agreed, NEW OS + NEW HARDWARE makes sense. Esp as the glitches, limitations and potential of the OS become known

I don;t like the DRM on vista or the fact it's such a system hog.

I do like Office 2007 though.

I do agree it can be a system hog, I have 1 GB of ram and its always above 50% used (in the Ram widget).... I guess min 3 gb would be the way to go for bloatware
