It seems ridicuous to need 3Gb Ram and a tidy gpc to run an OS. Whats going to be left for the games and apps?

I am a computer tech (whoopdee doo I know) and have been installing Vista for over a month. A gb of ram is fine. Its the video card that helps with running Aero. As far as it being a resource hog check this out:

I would not wait a year because if your computer needs the upgrade your gonna have to do it anyway.

The only thing I had to adjust to with Vista was finding out where everything was but I like all the changes it has made. I can't justify getting Vista Ultimate but that is only because I don't use the extra features, yet.

512 of ram is ok for vista, I have a friend who has p4 2.2 , 512 ram, nvidia 128 and it runs smooth.
I think it depends on the kind of software you use.

The Vista box recommends at least:
          1GHz processor
          1 GB of RAM
          128MB of graphic memory
          15GB of free diskspace
