Singh Beats Woods at Deutsche Bank to Take No. 1 Golf Ranking
Sept. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Vijay Singh ended the 264-week run of Tiger Woods as the world's No. 1-ranked golfer, beating Woods and Adam Scott by three strokes at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Singh shot a 2-under-par 69 during today's final round at the TPC of Boston in Norton, Massachusetts, for a 268 total to take his sixth U.S. PGA Tour event of the year and end Woods' record streak that stretched back five years.
``It's not too bad is it? I've had a good run,'' Woods said in a post-tournament televised interview on ABC. ``I'm excited about the things I'm working on and I can't wait to get back out and start playing.''
Singh had a three-stroke lead at the start of today's round, but he and Woods were tied at 13-under when Woods bogeyed the 13th hole. Singh then birdied No. 15 and the final two holes to seal the win. He needed to finish ahead of Woods to assume the No. 1 ranking.
``I've played pretty good for the last two years. I just keep plodding along trying to win golf tournaments, and here I am,'' Singh told ABC news after today's round.
Scott, the defending champion at the event, shot a 6-under- par 65 to finish tied Woods for second at 271.
Singh, a 41-year-old native of Fiji, has 21 career wins on the PGA Tour and has won a tour-leading $7.9 million this year.
Woods, 28, shot a 69 today, with four birdies and two bogeys. He has 40 career PGA wins, including this year's Accenture Match Play Championship.
