Good luck Mayan. Sounds like your doing great so far. I'll do the same someday.

About that picture... anyone notice how enlarged the heart is?

Friday, I was at home and out of smokes...too lazy to go to the store..and thought to myself...I just won't smoke today. It is now Tuesday. I was super cranky this weekend, but the nic withdrawals have passed. Now it's just the mental addiction. I want one so bad! I didn't plan on quiting this weekend, but it seems like the right thing to do...wish me luck.
good for you. once you get past the mental addiction you will be ina lot better position.. but then again, i dont think one will ever be able to get away from the mental part of smoking..

ive been about 6-8 weeks free now, except for the occasional cigar

I've smoked since an early age & gave up 9 weeks ago, it isn't easy & I have incentive not to at the moment. The cravings are still there just don't give in & think of the money you're saving

Wow - If that pic doesn't convince people to stop smoking I don't know what will (other than losing relatives to lung cancer)

I used to smoke only when drinking so I wasn't a true smoker but I haven't had a casual cig in two years- don't miss it and neither will you!

Re: Another smoker attempts to quit

Anyone wanting to quit should check out Allen Carr's book "Easy Way To Quit Smoking". It's cheap, like 10 bucks, and a relatively short read. Not too preachy. It focuses on a lot of the overlooked psychological perspectives that smokers acquire in their time smoking. It's usually the case that smokers do want to quit, this book addresses the reasons why just that simple desire to quit often isn't enough.

I found a lot of it really insightful. For one thing, how people trying to quit think of it in terms of denying themselves something that they innately really want. It's kinda like telling yourself not to think of a pink elephant. The very proposition sticks it in your head. Same kinda thing with smoking. So long as you come at it from the perspective that you're denying yourself, and that somehow after a while you'll just not want it anymore, it fucks you up. But if you come at it from the perspective that you're doing exactly what you want, that you've made the conscious decision to be a non-smoker as opposed to a smoker depriving themselves, then you're good and things start to fall into place. It's the difference between saying "I can't smoke" (denying yourself what you think you want) and "I don't want to smoke" (giving yourself exactly what you want).

People feel like they go nuts without a smoke, yet fail to recognize there are plenty of periods of time where people will go without a cigarette and not suffer any ill effects. People sleep all night and do all kinds of shit in the morning before they have their first smoke, for example, they don't wake up freaking the fuck out in the middle of the night. But once people get it into their head that they "need a smoke" , they nic fit.

In reality I think the physical withdrawal from nicotine addiction isn't as bad as people want to think of it as, in a matter of days your body can get over it. The bigger problem is the psychological addiction, and once you start breaking down the perspectives that form that psychologial addiction, it becomes easy.

Re: Another smoker attempts to quit

well, good luck to ya man! i just recently quit after smoking for 6 years... i knew that i wouldn't be able to quit completely... so i've reduced my smoking to only smoking when i drink... which is not that much, usually like 2 or 3 nights out of a week. i've been doing it for about 2 months now and it's been awesome! after the first week, i had no more cravings, and didn't even think about smoking. i think it has been easier to deal with mentally, because in the back of my mind i know that i've allowed myself to smoke when i drink... so far so good... i cut out about 90% of my smoking... not a bad start! good luck... maybe something similar might be a good first step.
i reject your reality, and substitute my own.

Good luck Mayan, stay strong. Don't use drinking as an excuse to light up either, if you smoke one you'll eventually be back to smoking as much as before.

good luck dude, my wife and i quit smoking in december 2003, i did more for the emotional support, since i never smoked more than 1 or 2 a day it was relatevely easy for me, i have not smoked since than and dont miss it at all. my wife smokes one or two a week and i try to give her a hard time about it every time i catch her.

not the easiest thing but can be done.

now we trying to quit smoking pot!
i wish it was as easy as cigarettes!

you can do it mayan, its just a decision.. its like the dumb example i always use, if i gave you a million dollars to never go near a cigarette, do you think you could do it? ofcourse you would. always focus on the reward..
