For nothing, just fun...Karma indicates how active a user is (like the loudspeakers on top of everybody's name or your forum rank which changes after x number of postings) and you can be nice to others....if you like what somebody posted or if you would like to give somebody a virtual hug, you can send him Karma points. Don't take it too serious...just another useless thingie to play around with. :P
