    The minimal wave...

I couldn't see where this belongs in any of the music sub-forums so here will do...

Want to pick you guys' brains on what you think of the current minimal wave which seems to be sweeping through the scene.

It seems to be quite a massive wave to me, but does it have what it takes to last? I love my music abstract and f$#ked up, but there's just something missing from it's current incarnation.

It's probably got more to do with the sets themselves. They seem to lack any direction and are more just a collection of twisted tracks.

As I said, I love the music contained within those sets, but the sets themselves are completely devoid of any direction (Bodzin sets are a good example of this), and the high similarity in the music makes every single set by everyone spinning this style sound exactly the same.

No doubt there'll be a backlash to this style (it happens with every style prog adopts whether you like it or not). What do you think is next? How big do you think it'll be? Do you welcome it? How long do you think minimal will hang around for?

The reason I ask these questions is because to me it seems to be making a large splash, but for some reason I don't think it has what it takes to back itself up.

For me, I reckon we're gonna hit the other end of the scale and start putting a lot in to productions. Tech house on steroids. The elements in minimal mixed with the activity tech house delivers. I can see that sort of mix delivering an equal amount of twistedness to what minimal delivers.

Am I a rambling idiot or a wise one? Discuss.

nope, i couldn't agree more. i enjoy some minimal tracks, but alot bore me to tears. working them into a set with other types of music (prog, tech, etc) is great. 4 hours of minimal...no thanks.

i hope to see it incorporated into more sets, but in a way that allows for some great tension build-up. a minimal track followed by something with some melody...now that is a great thing.

music will always keep evolving. remember when we wondered where could we go after prog. prog was it for years. well that evolved in to minimal. i embrace change but it's sad for those who don't. i will listen to music that makes me tingle no matter what genre it is. who knows how long the minimal wave will last til the next one comes along. i am happy with where music is at these days.

        Re: The minimal wave...

I guess my main gripe is that the style of minimal I hear in all these live sets in the P&R forum seem to limit heavily the direction of the sets. They all just seem to be a 90 minute collection of minimal tracks.

Don't get me wrong there's some mind blowing productions out there, in fact the majority of them are quite good. It's the sets I hold my gripe with more. They just seem very limited.

maybe that comes off as harsh, although i didn't mean it that way.

No offence taken matey, it crosses my mind whenever I have some criticism. I've been trying to save up for a pair for a very long time, and it should hopefully be quite soon that I realise my dream.

glad you know what i mean. at time the music around gets to goddamn repetitive and you start hearing the same tracks all over. thats when you go dive into your own cdr's and start mixing up what sounds good for you.

i'm bored to tears with it, much moreso than i ever was with the drumtrack tribal of 2001-2003. fortunately, newton's law always applies to dance music and we'll see the return of melodic tunes with some element of musicianship soon enough.

i definitely enjoy a lot of the mindfuck minimal shit in moderation (preferably at the beginning of a set), but these days, it's all there is in way too many sets, both live and on cd/downloaded..

out with the bleeps and farty bass.

What's an example of minimal right now? I can't keep track. If you mean sets from Magda or Villalobos, yeah, that kind of sets have no direction to me. It's stuff that keeps pulling you into a hole when you're fucked or high. But stuff like Martinez's Echochamber which is quite minimal, rocks.

I like it as long as it is incorporated into other genres. A minimal 'influence' on tunes is spot on for me..
These conversations are always tricky though because of the difficulty in defining genres. What I think sounds minimally, someone else would totally disagree (and what fun conversations this can lead to!). Thats the one of the beautys of progressive music, long may it live..

Palmer I would've said the same thing in 2006, but it seems to have absolutely exploded even more at the start of this year.

Does any electronic sound have what it takes to back itself up? People have been having this same discussion on every style of electronic music since the 808 was invented. All it amounts to is a statement of your own musical preferences.
